Where to stay for a Oklahoma State Football Game?

My husband and I are coming to the Georgia and Oklahoma State Football game to be played on Sept. 5th. I do not know which city to begin looking for hotels in. Do I look in Oklahoma City or Tulsa? Please help and also it would be wonderful if I could get some hotel or inn recommendations. We have never been to Oklahoma before. Thanks for any or all the help you can give me.

Are you wanting to stay in the city and see some sights while your here, or just somewhere close to the game?

In Stillwater I recommend the Atherton (historic campus hotel) or the Cimarron, a brand new independent hotel.

Oklahoma City is about an hour drive down I-35. Tulsa is pretty much equidistant but it is a TOLL ROAD between Tulsa and Stillwater, so if you are wanting to stay in a bigger city and drive in for the game, you might want to go with OKC for that reason. Probably cheaper to fly into OKC as well.

In OKC, check out the Colcord Hotel, the Skirvin Hilton, Hampton Inn Bricktown, and Hyatt Place. The first three put you right in the action of downtown.

The Atherton and everywhere other hotel is already booked for the weekend of the Georgia-Okla. St. game in Stillwater. I think I%26#39;ll take your suggestion and fly into Oklahoma City and we will stay there. I have looked at the hotels suggested and I%26#39;m between the Colcord and the Skirvin Hilton. Which is better located for restaurants and things to see(Memorial,Bricktown) and the better hotel? Also, if you have any recommendations for good restaurants and things we must see and do while we are in OKC, please advise. Thanks.

The Colcord and the Skirvin are within a couple of blocks of each other in the OKC downtown area. Both are within easy walking distance of Bricktown, the Bombing Memorial, the OKC Museum of Art and all other downtown attractions.

As to which is a better hotel, IMO it would be a toss-up between the two. The Skirvin is a 93 year old historic property and OKC landmark. After almost two decades of being empty and neglected, renovations were completed and it was reopened two years ago under the Hilton banner and has 225 rooms and suites.

The Colcord is a newer boutique hotel that also opened in 2007. It has 108 rooms and is located in a historic 1910 office building, OKC%26#39;s first skyscraper and the first in OKC with an elevator, that was renovated into a hotel.

Both have all the amenities and which one is better would depend entirely on personal taste rather than on any glaring differences between them.

What type of food are you looking for?

There is a steak house in the Automobile Alley section of downtown call Red Prime Steak (http://www.redprimesteak.com/). And a great Italian style restaurant is Trattoria Il Centro (http://www.trattoriailcentro.com/).

I like The Mantel in Bricktown (http://www.themantelokc.com/) and if you are looking for Tex-Mex, you can try Chelino%26#39;s.

There are also some nice restaurants in both the Colcord and the Skirvin. Nonna%26#39;s, also in Bricktown (http://www.nonnas.com/) also gets good reviews.

If you just want a slice of pizza, try Falcone%26#39;s in Bricktown next to the Harkin%26#39;s theater.

Let us know if there is any more you need!

:)

modcon made great suggestions, except I would recommend La Luna for Tex-Mex over Chelino%26#39;s. Much better quality food IMO.

Full disclosure: I work at the Colcord.

But I will try to present some objective comparisons.

The Skirvin is of course a Hilton, while the Colcord is an independent boutique and part of the Coury Collection which also includes Tulsa%26#39;s Hotel Ambassador and Bartlesville%26#39;s Inn at Price Tower (Frank Lloyd Wright%26#39;s only skyscraper).

Skirvin%26#39;s parking is a bit more expensive I believe, and slightly less convenient. They are in a garage underneath, while the Colcord has a gated surface lot.

The Colcord I believe is the only hotel downtown offering a complimentary shuttle in the downtown area, including Bricktown, Midtown, the Memorial, etc.

The Colcord has free wireless internet. Skirvin does not.

Skirvin I believe has 24-hour room service. The Colcord has room service 6:30 am to midnight.

Skirvin has a pool. Colcord does not.

In general I agree that between the 2, it%26#39;s a matter of taste. Colcord has a more modern decor, while the Skirvin is very traditional. Both have a lot of history and are in great buildings.

Having stayed in both the Colcord and the Skirvin, I prefer the former. The rooms are bigger, the air circulations systems are quieter, the bathrooms are more spacious, and the wireless is free. The Skirvin is nice, but I prefer the Colcord.

To Modcon%26#39;s restaurant list I would add Cafe do Brasil, a wonderful Brasilian restaurant, and 1492, a Latin restaurant which does Mexican and a whole lot more.

jbrown has some very good points.

I haven%26#39;t eaten Tex-Mex in downtown in a long time. I forgot all about La Luna. I agree with him - much better food at La Luna.

The Corporate vs Independent between the Skrivin and the Colcord is why I mentioned the Skirvin was a Hilton property. While the Skirvin is also %26#39;privately%26#39; owned by Skirvin Partners LLC (a Marcus Management Companies and Skirvin Partners in Development partnership) it has to conform to the Hilton standards. That might be important to some people.

But I forgot to mention the Colcord%26#39;s Coury connection which could also be important to some. Sorry for the omission.

twoprofs also has some good reasons to pick one over the other.

Hope your decision is a little easier with all these comments.

And, as an OSU fan don%26#39;t take it wrong if I don%26#39;t wish you a totally pleasant stay in our fair state!
