cross country help needed

I will be driving from Pennsylvania to Arizona and want ideas for overnight stops that would be convenient to the drive but also a nice place for dinner and walking around in the evening. We certaily don%26#39;t want to add hours and hours to the drive, and expect to cover about 8 hours a day. With that in mind, does anyone have suggestions for stopping/sleeping points along the way, rather than just pulling in somewhere when we are tired? Thanks for your help!

What Interstates are you planning to use? I can assume you are taking the Turnpike (I-76) to I-70, then (via some short hops) to I-44, and then to I-40.

If you come through OKC on I-44, getting to Bricktown is not really out of your way - from I-44, take I-235 south to one of the downtown OKC exits and Bricktown is basically right there. (Any good directions software can give you specifics.) And when you leave Bricktown, it%26#39;s an easy-on to I-40, which is the rest of your trip.

Downtown OKC/Bricktown has some interesting attractions, nice restaurants and a canal that can be walked or you can ride a boat.

Here are some previous topics covering OKC and what is available - attractions as well as hotels:

My wife and I (in our early 60%26#39;s) made a southwestward trip in %26#39;07. She has back and knee trouble and can%26#39;t ride for too long at a time, so I usually plan on around 450 miles a day at most with frequent stops. For motels I just look at the map and try to plan on cities or towns that fit that mileage estimate; we use the Choice Hotels chain, but any other may be fine for you as well. I usually make reservations in advance via their website, then I%26#39;m all set by the time we start out; I can change plans 24 hours in advance, but rarely do so.

I originally saw your post in the TN forum, and then found where you had posted in other states. I chose to reply in the OK forum because that%26#39;s where you%26#39;ll probably first come into proximity with old Historic Route 66. There are several websites available with lots of info and ideas that might interest you, especially if you%26#39;re anywhere near our age. We like the reminders of days gone by, and made several enjoyable stops both going out and coming back. The two highlights were the Devil%26#39;s Rope Museum (about barbed wire) in McLean TX, and ';Standing on the corner in Winslow AZ';, a real-life experience based on the line from the Eagles song.

Here%26#39;s a few pictures from that trip. Happy travels!

Thanks so much for your reply. Actually, I am driving west with my teenage son to take him to college in Prescott AZ. We would be interested in stopping to see anything unusual or taking any really beautiful routes.

Parts of old Route 66 in Oklahoma are a very nice scenic drive. Highly recommended. Also in the unusual vein, on 66 in a town called Arcadia there is a Historic Round Barn. Also, very close to the Round Barn in Arcadia is a new gas station/diner/soda shop called ';Pops'; that is very unusual. See the links...
