discounts for hotels???? Where to get?

I was looking at the reviews on radisson (with the indoor water park) and seen where someone paid like 80 and someone else paid 60. When I check their prices its 130 a night. Does anyone know how to get these deals?

Call them directly at the Tulsa location. Tell them what you saw and make an offer.

Veteran's memorial wall

Where is this memorial wall located in Roland and how do I find it?

Veteran's memorial wall

Never heard of such a thing in Roland, but you might call the Chamber of Commerce and ask them. The number is (918) 427-0098

Live blues March 17,18

My husband and I are travelling to Oklahoma City on March 17 an 18. We%26#39;re hoping to get a chance to hear some live music, especially blues. Any suggestions?

Live blues March 17,18

Here is a list of clubs that offer Blues Music. http://www.mary4music.com/ClubsOK.html

Keep an eye on Matt Kemp%26#39;s Blog for current information.

http://www.krxo.com/mattkemp.aspx

He has a good list of where and when the music will be.

The Biting Sow is supposed to have live music every night - no idea if they are still doing that or not. You might give them a call (no website.)

They are in Bricktown at:

1 E California Ave

Oklahoma City, OK 73104

Live blues March 17,18

The Biting Sow is your best bet.

You also will want to pick up an Oklahoma Gazette when you are here. it%26#39;s a free weekly available in most restaurants and other locations. It has great A%26amp;E coverage including where to catch live music.

Apprecitate the help Jbrown 84 and Modcon. Have looked at the sites suggested and we%26#39;ll try to see a few bands. I%26#39;ll report back at the end of our trip (we%26#39;ve been on the road for 7 weeks).

Thanks

You%26#39;re welcome.

If you have any more questions I%26#39;m sure one of us can help.

:)

Thanks again Modcon and Jbrown 84. We ended up only being in OK for the 17th as our plans changed. We had a blast. We did a little sightseeing then went to Bricktown. Not sure if either of you were in the area on St. Paddy%26#39;s Day but there was a stage set up with beer tents etc. We ate at the Brewery then watched a bit at the beer tent. Finished off at the Biting Sow where it was open mic night. Loved the whole area. Reminded us of San Antonio%26#39;s Riverwalk. We hope to return again next year on our way home from Arizona.

Glad you had a good time. Let us know if there is anything we can do for future visits!

Glad you had a good time!

Hotel w-Kids

My family of four are looking to spend a couple nights in Tulsa later this week. We will be going to the aquarium and zoo, but do not have to stay close to either. We are looking for a nice hotel with an indoor swimming pool. Any suggestions???

Price range does not matter...

Hotel w-Kids

Have you looked at the radisson that has an indoor water play area? I have never stayed there so can%26#39;t comment but if you have small children it looks pretty neat.

Hotel w-Kids

I actually did see that hotel after I made my post. I was in the process of making reservations there and their web site said the water park is closed because of maintenance.

Thanks,....

I was going to recommend the Radisson as well. Have you called them? Maybe the maintenance will end soon and they just didn%26#39;t update the website.

Low key acoustic live music

Can anyone recommend a low key spot for acoustic live music? Maybe near the Airport or on the East side?

FIRST timer report- breckoma cabin

We spent christmas in BB. We stayed at the Breckoma cabin. First, for people who has never been in BB this place is really beautiful, I mean really beautiful. Breckoma cabin does not have many pictures in the website but it is a very nice cabin, with everything you may need. The cabin looks ok from outside but inside it is very nice. I think it would have been perfect cabin if it would have had a game room, but we have a great time. Weather was in the 60%26#39;s so we could not ask for more. Kids enjoyed every single second.

Glad you enjoyed your stay in our beautiful part of the state. AlCap

  • Nice Place(s) to stay and see for family

My wife and I are going to OKC for Apr 10 - 12 (Easter) we are taking are kids (3,8, and 11). I would like to stay at a nice place willing to pay $100 to $150/night. Some of the review I have read, someone makes a point about the neighborhood being bad or unsafe. I have no particular preference of area of town. Open to ideas. Also, any great brunches or Easter Brunches? Thanks

Nice Place(s) to stay and see for family

Are you looking for a single room or two rooms/suite at that rate?

    Tulsa Inddor kids activities

We are coming to Tulsa on Spring Break Mar 16-19 with our 10 and 6 yr olds-we were hoping to go to the zoo but looks like a rainy time. Suggestions on activities for us? They love indoor mini golf! Thanks!

The zoo has an awesome indoor rain forest.

    Hi Deba-

my husband and I live in Tulsa, and we have a 4 year old active little girl. Just for ';in-town'; fun, we like to take her to the Radisson Hotel here in town, it is located on 41st and Hwy 169 (just the address, you are not close to the Hwy.. you cannot here the traffic) They have a fun indoor pool, with a ';child size'; slide, the water is not that deep, but a lot of fun for children of all ages. Take a look at their website, it shows pictures of the inside of the hotel and the pool area. On 71st and Memorial, there is an inside theme park call Incredible Pizza..Tons of fun for the whole family. Bumper animals, race cars on an indoor race track, bowling, bumper bowling, minature golf, tons and tons of video/arcade games... all you can eat pizza, salad bar and pasta bar. We also have Lasar Tag on 31st and Sheridan. It is alot of fun for children of all ages.. parent included. (That is if you dont mind the whole ';pretend'; shooting gun ';thing';). Hope these ideas help a little... enjoy your time in Tulsa. Oh, by the way, the hotel is quite a steal for everything you get with it, right now it is $109 and that includes entry into the pool area, you can also get a package that includes pizza, pop in the pool area for a little bit more.

    Good Luck here in Tulsa,

    Therese Roberts

There is also a new hands-on interactive arts and science children%26#39;s museum here in Tulsa. It is located at 6202 S. Sheridan Rd and the website is www.kaleidoscopecm.com The website has a great video on it of the museum!

The most talked-about gallery leaves you breathless as you walk through an underwater viewing tunnel into a domed room while the largest bull sharks in captivity and giant lemon sharks swim beside and over you plus hundreds of other aquatic creatures including stingrays and seahorses. The Hayes Family Ozark Stream exhibit, will simulate an Ozark stream, complete with the excitement of beavers, raccoons and river otters.

The Lodge ranch house was built by Frank %26amp; Jane Phillips in 1925, sits on 3700 acres and is where they hosted business leaders, Indian chiefs and famous entertainers among the 200,000 %26#39;guests%26#39; at their country home.

    How was your trip Debster?

This thread is full of GREAT info for our day trip to Tulsa! Thanks!

Road Trip - in Tulsa for 1 day in July...

Hi all! I%26#39;ll be traveling from Chicago to Ft. Worth, Texas with 3 boys (13, 10 and 7) we%26#39;re planning on stopping in St. Louis for a day, then Tulsa for a day and then will be in Ft. Worth area for a week, then we%26#39;ll head home through Shreveport, Memphis, etc! We%26#39;re very excited!

There seem to be quite a few great attractions in Tulsa for families. I have never been to Oklahoma so I truly don%26#39;t know where to begin! I%26#39;m hoping the lovely people here can help suggest some great ideas to fill our day in Tulsa! Is Wooloroc pretty great? The 2 youngest are wild about nature, animals, etc! Are there hotels near there that you can recommend?

    Thank you all very much!

Road Trip - in Tulsa for 1 day in July...

    I%26#39;m sorry, I didn%26#39;t see this first.

Wooloroc would be an excellent choice for a day trip. It would consume most of your day. I doubt if there are hotels in that area, I may have to go look at a map, it may even be closer to Bartlesville.

In that case, I would probably choose a hotel that had the kinds of activities that you enjoy, like a pool, and not worry about proximity because it won%26#39;t make that much difference.

Road Trip - in Tulsa for 1 day in July...

We have a really nice zoo here, though it%26#39;s not all that large it does have a lot of atractions (new elephant exhibit, a rain forest exhibit, often a traveling exhibition).

There%26#39;s the Oklahoma Aquarium in Jenks, also a good kid venue, with a hotel in walking distance.

We also have a children%26#39;s museum and an air %26amp; space museum with planetarium. So there are a lot of things to do.

Woolaroc would be a fun trip, but it would take the day. No hotels/motels nearby; Bartlesville is a little closer though not a lot closer.

Another different venue would be the Tall Grass Prairie Preserve, run by the Nature Conservancy. It%26#39;s about 60 miles outside of Tulsa (near Pawhuska); they have a docent program and if you call the office well in advance you might be able to arrange a special tour. Just google ';oklahoma tall grass prairie preserve'; or ';nature conservancy tulsa'; and you%26#39;ll find links that will get you to the right page--or try this link nature.org/wherewework/…tallgrass.html

Hope you have a great time on your trip; it sounds like you%26#39;re really making an effort to make it fun for your family!

I%26#39;m thinking the aquarium might be a huge hit...especially with a hotel nearby! I did a bit of research on Jenks area and it seems like it may make a good base for our short time in Tulsa!

Off to read the other responses in my other thread!

    Thanks all!

    Dancing

My girlfriends and I are coming up for a weekend getaway. Can you recommend a place where we can go dancing and have some fun?

    thanks!

    Dancing

There are two really good night-time entertainment areas--Brookside (Peoria Ave. from 33rd to 36th Street) and the Brady/Blue Dome District, downtown just North and East of the BOK Tower (the tallest building in Tulsa). Have fun!

    Dancing

Thanks for the help, are there any country bars? surely with Tulsa being in OK...there are places where cowboys go!

Relocating to Oklahoma City, any info welcome!

Just learned that daughter and fiancee are going to be moving to Oklahoma City for his job. I am busy doing searches, but any info would be greatly appreciated. Daughter is a teacher, major in Spanish and El. Ed, so info on schools would be great. My main concern is safe areas to live. If anyone would like to email me with information please do! They have a dog and a cat, so they are hoping to either rent a house with a yard, or find a condo that will allow pets. Thank you for any information!

    johnr14728@aol.com

Relocating to Oklahoma City, any info welcome!

It would be helpful to know where his job is located. While OKC is a ';small'; city population wise, it is a ';huge'; city geographically.

Brady Theatre - Is it comfortable? Is it modern?

Does anyone know if the Brady Theatre has comfortable seats? I know the Brady is a very old theatre, perhaps 80 or 90 years old.

Are the seats wide enough for the average person?

Is there enough knee room for those 6 feet tall and taller?

Brady Theatre - Is it comfortable? Is it modern?

The ';Old Lady On Brady'; is a great place to see a concert; it has very good acoustics and so much history that a lot of artists like to play there even though it%26#39;s a pretty small house (especially when compared to the BOK Center). It is old, and the seats are a bit cramped. I%26#39;m 6%26#39;2'; and pretty big, but I can make it through a concert there. While tall, I am only of average width and the width of the seats is OK for me.

They upgraded the bathrooms and bars a couple of years ago, so the lines for the bathroom are a thing of the past.

So, I wouldn%26#39;t say it%26#39;s modern, but it is a cool place to listen to a concert!

Brady Theatre - Is it comfortable? Is it modern?

Wow Bob, you are from Tulsa? I%26#39;m not a big guy, but have been to Brady twice. I%26#39;m from Wichita but took the trip to see Lindsey Buckingham and Moody Blues. Should be comfortable enough, but depends on the seating on floor level as far as leg room. Let us know how you find it!

  • Where to stay....?

We are stopping at OKC for one night, July 14, on a month-long, cross-country trip from New Jersey via Memphis.

We plan on arriving around 4 p.m., dining at Cattleman%26#39;s Steakhouse for dinner, making a visit to the Stockyards area and perhaps a brief visit to the OKC Memorial.

In the morning, we%26#39;ll spend a few hours at the Cowboy Heritage Museum before heading off Amarillo.

Our group includes my husband, myself and four kids: 13, 11, 11, and 8, so we need either a suite hotel arrangement or two rooms.

We are on a budget--33 nights of lodging sure adds up so we are some camping, some cabins, some hotels).

Given our brief stay in OKC, we are planning on a hotel stay. I am hoping to score 2 rooms on Priceline for cheaper than a room at an Embassy Suites or the like, but we%26#39;ll see.

So here%26#39;s where I need your help...

Is there an area to avoid in choosing a one night stop-over hotel? Also, how far is the airport or other hotel areas from our areas of interest?

And finally, do you think our itinerary is doable for our short stay? If not, what would you do without?

    Thanks for your help!

    Where to stay....?

The I-40 and Meridian corridor has relatively easy access to the Stockyards and Western Heritage Museum. Some of the hotels to look into are Holiday Inn Express Hotel %26amp; Suites (4400 Highline Blvd), Hilton Garden Inn (801 S Meridian Ave), the Hyatt Inn (1818 S. Meridian), Embassy Suites (1815 S. Meridian), Sleep Inn (4620 W Enterprise Way), Marriott Courtyard (4301 Highline Blvd) and the Hampton Inn (1905 S Meridian).

You could also try the Hampton Inn (300 East Sheridan) or Residence Inn (400 East Reno) in the Bricktown area, but those may cost more due to their location.

Since you are headed West, the Heritage Museum takes you north of I-40, so you will have to backtrack, but this is easily done from there using I-44 to I-40 (and just as easy to get to from the downtown/Meridian area).

Are there any places to avoid? I would suggest you not stay in the vicinity of the Western Heritage Museum. And use your judgment about really inexpensive hotels.

If you have any questions about a specific property you can always ask here.

    :)

As for the itinerary - it depends on how long you are planning to stay at any of the sites. The Memorial Museum closes at 6PM, so a 4PM arrival will not allow you to go inside, but the outside area is open 24-7.

The Heritage Museum is open 9AM to 5PM, 7-Days a week.

And, if you haven%26#39;t found it yet, check this website - http://www.stockyardscity.org/ - for information on Stockyard City.

    Where to stay....?

    Thanks...

Actually, I only thought we%26#39;d visit the Memorial, not the museum this time.

And thanks for the directions. That will help.

It seems like the things I%26#39;m targeting are all within about 10 miles of each other. Is that right?

Would a ride from the Stockyards to the Memorial be more than 20 minutes. How about from the Stockyards to the museum? Is parking an issue?

Stockyards to the memorial is less than ten minutes. Stockyards to the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum is about 15 minutes.

The Western Heritage Museum has ample parking in a dedicated lot.

The memorial has a pay lot next door, but if you go in the evening, you should have no problem finding a nearby parallel spot. Meters aren%26#39;t checked after 5:00 p.m.

The memorial is very nice after dark, at it%26#39;s perfectly safe. Usually a lot of people there, including park rangers.

The only thing I can think to tell you to avoid are the hotels calling themselves ';Bricktown _____';. I think there is a Bricktown Inn %26amp; Suites or something like that. These are not in Bricktown and are about a mile away in a slightly sketchy area. The only hotels actually in Bricktown are the Hampton and the Residence as mentioned by modcon.

Using public transportation April 11 to 14 (OKC)

My husband and I would be visiting OKC for the first time and booked at Hyatt Place Airport. Can anyone advise on using public transport during April 11 to 14 (Easter time)... or do you think it is very necessary to rent a car.

    thanks

    VDS

Using public transportation April 11 to 14 (OKC)

The Oklahoma Spirit Trolley runs between the Meridian corridor (where the Hyatt Place is) and downtown/Bricktown/Stockyards city. This will get you to most points of interest, but not all. And I don%26#39;t think it runs much later than midnight. It%26#39;s relatively inexpensive.

    gometro.org/metro_transit%20folder/metro_tra鈥?/a>

Using public transportation April 11 to 14 (OKC)

The Spirit Trolley referenced by jbrown is a good if limited choice.

But if you are wanting to go anywhere other than the Downtown/Stockyards area you will need transportation other than public transport. A car rental is an option, but if you are only wanting to visit one or two places other than Downtown/Stockyards a taxicab could be a less expensive option than renting a car.

    Thanks to both of you...

    regards

    VDS

Well, Did you get a cab or use public transportation? Please follow up and help others? Thanks!

    Azalea Festival

can anyone recommend a ';must go to'; restaurant in Muskogee? Will just be there for the day with hubby and our two girls ages 10 and 11.

    Azalea Festival

How about Miss Addie%26#39;s Tea Room? My father swears by it, though I%26#39;ve never been there myself.

    Azalea Festival

Thanks Radio. We just walked in the door from our day in Muskogee. Got a tip from Southern Living Mag. and had lunch at Smoke House Bob%26#39;s. The food was fab and the workers were so nice. They even had a TV with an African-American preacher screaming a sermon while we ate. hehe

Try Jaspers....excellent dining experience and the bar serves good drinks! They are open for dinner nightly, and serve excellent food.

Also, a favorite of my daughter%26#39;s, and right across from the mall, is Little Italy.

Muskogee has several really good restaurants. If you like barbeque...try Maylon%26#39;s BBQ, Cowboy%26#39;s BBQ, My Place BBQ or Runts. Maylon%26#39;s and Cowboy%26#39;s are my favorites. But some locals would never eat BBQ anywhere but My Place or Runts. My Place has been in Muskogee the longest. If you like chili dogs go to Chet%26#39;s. Their chili cheese dogs are addictive. Most people eat at least two and they make really good milk shakes too. Chet%26#39;s and My Place have been here since the 50%26#39;s. If you want to have a real Okie experience, go to Okie%26#39;s and have an Okie Mash. They have homemade strawberry ice cream in the summer. If you want a nice evening meal go to Miss Addie%26#39;s. Harmony House is a wonderful place to have lunch. They have a daily lunch special and really good cookies. Hamlin%26#39;s is a local favorite for Mexican food but our local El Chico%26#39;s is really good too. Both serve an addictive white sauce dip with their chips. We have two really good Italian restaurants...Napoli%26#39;s and Johnny V%26#39;s. If you like fried chicken go to Charlie%26#39;s and have their chicken nuggets which are great for picnics in the park. Muskogee has all the regular chains...Chili%26#39;s, Applebee%26#39;s, Rib Crib, Kentucky Fried Chicken, IHOP, Braum%26#39;s, McDonald%26#39;s, Taco Bell, Taco Bueno, El Chico, Golden Corral, Western Sizzlin, Sonic, Burger King, Pizza Hut, Mazzio%26#39;s, Pizza Inn, Long John%26#39;s, etc...

I was born and raised in Oklahoma for 65 years and have spent some of that time visiting Muskogee and never have I heard mention of Oklahoma Mash. What in heaven%26#39;s name is it? Why have I never heard of it? Is it a secret?

Single Female Looking For Safe Apartments Near Tinker Base

Hello, I%26#39;m relocating to work at Tinker and wanted to know if anyone could give me some advice on apartments in Midwest City. I took a look around the area and everything seemed pretty unsafe except for the Legacy apartments which is out of my price range. Please help!!!

Single Female Looking For Safe Apartments Near Tinker Base

I%26#39;m sorry but I don%26#39;t know much about apartments in that area. There are some good options downtown, which is only about 10 minutes from Tinker.

    Crime rate in Tulsa ?

I was looking online at a news station from Tulsa and they reported 12 murders in six weeks. They interviewed a woman who moved from a area of Tulsa to the south side after saying at dark it was unsafe and she wouldnt let her kids out alone no matter what time. I am thinking of buying in Tulsa, and am concerened. Please note I know ALL cities have problems but does anyone think Tulsa is worse them most and is the city being active in combating crime ? The article reported the city is low on officers. Thanks..and again this isnt meant to ';rag'; on Tulsa

    Crime rate in Tulsa ?

Runnerguy...Lived in S. Tulsa for 2 years from 1999-2000....The northside of the city is where most of the violent crimes occur with gangs etc...but the entire south half enjoys very little crime...would absolutely recommend buying in S. Tulsa...would think those murders were an aberration....just buy south or in the burbs surrounding S. Tulsa

    Crime rate in Tulsa ?

Tulsa PD has an interactive crime map. Just search around and you can find it, I%26#39;m sure. Doesn%26#39;t show the %26#39;burbs, but you%26#39;ll notice most of the serious stuff is north of 64/244.

Have lived in Tulsa since 1956. Latest crime spree is 90%+ drug or acquaintance related; not stranger-murders. I live %26amp; work downtown. Tulsa is great place to live, inexpensive, easy to get around, beautiful city, good art scene, lots of live music.

Check the stats, Tulsa%26#39;s crime rate is twice the national average. That said, south Tulsa is pretty quiet (Broken Arrow and Owasso are OK as well).

30 year resident of Tulsa here. That statistic is surprising to me. As others have said, there is an area of Tulsa north of Admiral that has been considered rougher for as long as I can remember, but it is not an area you need to enter unless you so choose - and I know many Tulsans who don%26#39;t. That said, my husband and I often eat at some terrific restaurants there, and have never felt threatened. I also did some volunteer legal work a couple of years ago, and as a young female went by myself into homes on the north side and did not feel uncomfortable.

I think most cities see an increase in overall crime when the economy takes a downturn - unfortunately, people become more desperate and at the same time less money is available for police protection. I still feel very safe in all areas of Tulsa, especially compared to other large cities. I see no reason you should be doubting your decision to move here, and you don%26#39;t have to confine yourself to ';South Tulsa'; or the suburbs, unless that is what you want - there are some beautiful historic homes in midtown for amazing prices.

Crime is up all over the city. Robbery sprees that have people nervous even on the south side. Per capita it is more dangerous now than Detroit.

It certianly went downhill after the 911 employment drop off, that combined with a spike in the ';undocumented'; population, combined with the police force turning a blind eye (refused to admit) the ';gang'; problem has resulted in what there is now.

The good news is that Oklahoma does have a pretty good process to obtain a concealled weapons permit. If you move there you should get one. You might not notice the problem in every day life, unless you go to a public event such as the Fair or stumble into the wrong neighbourhood. The north part of Tulsa is the worst, but if you go North of Owasso, OK it is much better. I personally would avoid living anywhere inside the city limits.

I moved from Boston to Tulsa a little over a year ago. I bought a house in South Tulsa. I feel very safe in Tulsa. Most of the murders are drug related and in the north part of town. There have been some daytime home breakins in south area. The new was elected on a platform to reduce crime in Tulsa. Great running trails along the Arkansas River and other parts of town and very good running town. Check out www.tulsarunningclub.com , www.tulsarun.com and www.route66marathon.com.

I lived in Tulsa from 1998 to 2006. I worked in the Promanade area for the later part and found that the bad element had taken over in th evenings especially during the summer months. We had a police patrol on those weekend evenings that helped control the gangs but it was hard for us who had shops in the mall. Our customers would not want to shop at night so our sales were slow after 8pm.

Is Tulsa worse than others. Yes, but I think it would depend on if youwere faced with it day in day out how your perception of the problem.

Where to stay in Lake Texoma?

I%26#39;m new to Texas and wanted to take my husband and two girls to Lake Texoma but I%26#39;m not sure where to stay. Our girls are both under 3 and my husband isn%26#39;t a big sporting guy so we are looking for non-boating, nice walks, beaches and quiet nights. Saw Tanglewood Resort as a safe option but interested in cabins too. What part of the lake would be good? Thank you!

Where to stay in Lake Texoma?

Tanglewood is probably your best bet. There are very few highly developed resort areas on this lake and of the few, Tanglewood is problaby the nicest with many amenities/activities on the same property.

In the same general area as Tanglewood, you will also find http://www.tobincabins.com/index.htm

A little further west is http://www.cedarbayou.com/index.asp

Where to stay in Lake Texoma?

There are a few more cabin rentals available on the OK side of the lake but I presumed you were looking at Texas since you mentioned Tanglewood.

You can also find a few cabin/home rentals on VRBO.com

  • budget hotel near airport

I am I need of a budget (but CLEAN) hotel located within walking distance of the airport. I don%26#39;t mind walking a little while but I will have my luggage with me so I am hoping to stay at least somewhat close. Thank you!

    budget hotel near airport

The only hotel that is WALKABLE from the airport is the Four Points by Sheraton, and I don%26#39;t know if you consider that budget.

Like many airports, ours is not really in a pedestrian area and is actually even more ';rural'; than most. The majority of the airport hotels are actually a couple miles north of the airport itself.

    budget hotel near airport

jbrown is correct about the Four Points not being budget at about $125 per weekday night and $95 per weekend. But it has a free shuttle to the terminal.

You could also check the hotels on S. Meridian Ave in the I-40 area. There are some inexpensive hotels in that area and some hotels have shuttle service to the Airport - it should be easy to check which ones.

    Good Luck.

from dallas fortworth to sapulpa oklahoma

could anyone help me , im looking at visiting a friend in oklahoma and i cant get a flight direct to tulsa as its out of my buget so im landing at either dfw or iah can anyone give me a route from either airports ,oh by the way im hiking to tulsa thanks and stay good.

from dallas fortworth to sapulpa oklahoma

    Wilf123,

I have lived in Tulsa for 30 years and have traveled to Dallas at least 20 times. I would definitely NOT recommend hitch hiking. Get a rental car or take a bus. Use priceline.com or hotwire.com for lowest rates. Might be able to get a reasonable rate by going to Enterprise Rent a Car direct.

Use mapquest.com for the route. Really only 1 straight thru option and even that takes you thru some very small towns. It is approximately 250 miles from Dallas to Tulsa. Travel time by car is about 4.5 to 5 hours. A couple of toll roads along the way as well.

I actually live about 5 miles from Sapulpa so I am very familiar with the exact route you will need to travel. Stay safe.

from dallas fortworth to sapulpa oklahoma

does the route take me through bad areas or do you think its to far to hike

There shouldn%26#39;t be any danger along the way.

I guess it will be an interesting adventure. I can%26#39;t imagine that you can%26#39;t get a $50 flight from dfw to tulsa. check southwest.com if you can get to the tulsa airport, i will pick you up and take you to sapulpa.

It seems like IAH is about twice as far from Tulsa as DFW. There is one stretch where you will go by a prison with signs on the road to not pick up hitchhikers.

    Good Luck!

thank you very much for your offer im most gratefull and your advice is very helpfull im leaving the uk in about 6 weeks and am looking forward to getting there again i was last over in oklahoma in june 1994 at camp gruba where i met my friend who i am visiting again thanks .

Sign up for the Ding! daily specials at southwestairlines.com. They have $49 flights from Dallas to Tulsa all the time. I still stay no to hitchhiking...too dangerous to risk it.

Soul or (Soulful) House Clubs in OKC

I know this is a long shot, but...

I have scoured the net trying to find a club that plays my kind of music. I%26#39;m visiting family in May, arriving on a Saturday morning, leaving on a Thursday and would really like to hit a club.

I%26#39;m looking for a club that will play Soul music. Not just Motown and Blues. Or one that plays some Soulful House, or even Disco. House/Trance music as a specified Genre is not the one.

    Any one have any suggestions?

Soul or (Soulful) House Clubs in OKC

I have asked around and done some research and if there are any places like you describe they are a well kept secret.

    Keep checking this site:

    http://www.okclive.com/

and search for other Oklahoma City Live Music sites to see if you can find some bands that will be playing locally that may suit your tastes.

Soul or (Soulful) House Clubs in OKC

I would suggest the Biting Sow. They have music nightly and the prices are the cheapest in town. Doc and the gang will definately entertain you.

    Doc and the Gang? :o/

    Thanks for the replies :)

We went to the Biting Sow last weekend for the first time. It was mostly Blues, but we loved it! We will definitely return....Doc Rocked!

Looking for a stop along 69/turnpike

I am taking our youth group to Port Arthur, TX and need a stop somewhere around midpoint from Kansas City, MO. If there is some minor inexpensive fun thing to do for the evening, that would be a bonus. It will be late June.

Thanks for any help you can offer!

Looking for a stop along 69/turnpike

Are you planning on stopping somewhere for the night? Or is this just a short (2 or so hours) stop that you want to spend doing something?

Also, what are your budget restrictions?

    :)

Looking for a stop along 69/turnpike

Yes, we will be staying the night and yes, we will be looking for some short (a couple hours) place to go/thing to do. Our budget will be pretty small unless we end up doing another fundraiser....which I don%26#39;t anticipate. Thanks for your help!

what town will you be stopping in?

I%26#39;m actually looking for suggestions. I don%26#39;t have much knowledge of the area, so I%26#39;m just looking for some input.

The half-way point on that trip is going to be somewhere around Durant. Southeastern Oklahoma University has a very active summer theater program, which might be operating and interesting when you come through. They have a Microtel, Best Western, Hampton, HI-Express, etc.

If you don%26#39;t want to travel that far, McAlester would be the next town north, where you%26#39;ll find a BW, HI-E and a few more. Unless you want to tour the prison or there%26#39;s a rodeo in town, McAlester doesn%26#39;t offer much that I%26#39;m aware of. A few miles east of town there%26#39;s a nice state park, Robber%26#39;s Cave, which has trails, playgrounds, a lake with rental peddle boats, etc.

    Twoprofs,

Thanks so much for your help! One of the state parks sounds perfect. I will check them out.

    Lower Mountain Fork River Floats

Be forewarned that if you plan on floating this river to obey the law. If you litter you will be promptly paddled to the bank and a ticket will be issued for $168 by the authorities. Do not offer anyone an alcoholic beverage or nicotine or you will be ticketed for contributing to the delinquency of a minor. If you got to go to the restroom don%26#39;t expose it or you will be ticketed for public exposure. On the weekend expect to be observed by moles on the water or hiding on the shorelines. Be especially careful through the Rock Garden, Fuller Eddy, Chute, Presbyterian Falls, and Cooper Creek areas. I see a growing trend and it has it%26#39;s positives and negatives. Keep your glass and trash to yourself and you won%26#39;t have any problems. I pass this information as a public service as I don%26#39;t want to see your trip to this area ruined by doing something that can be prevented by using common sense and obeying the laws. AlCap

    Lower Mountain Fork River Floats

A bit more information in regard to these floats. I constantly see people on the river in tubes that become very frustrated due to low river flows and the prevailing southerly winds that usually occur. Be prepared for a long day if you attempt this in a tube. These outfitters are usually booked on canoe or kayak rentals so please call ahead to book these.

    Lower Mountain Fork River Floats

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QWOiUs_pwPA This is a video I did Saturday, Sept 27th. Hope you enjoy

Just a reminder about the tubing situation if the Corp isn%26#39;t generating. Also a law was passed that glass containers are now illegal on the river. If you want your trip ruined, bring your bottles because you will be ticketed. I mention these as a public service announcement. AlCap

    Beautiful video there Al!

    claremore, OK

My husband will be staying in Claremore, OK for 3 wks, working during the week. I will visit on weekends. We are from Louisiana. Is there anything that we need to make sure we check out thats near there, other than the Will Rogers Musuem ?

    Thanks

    connie

    claremore, OK

I lived in Claremore a few years ago.

One thing I didn%26#39;t do that I wished I had was visit the J.M. Davis Museum.

    http://www.thegunmuseum.com/menu1.htm

I enjoyed going out the Claremore lake and just enjoying the scenery.

Will Roger%26#39;s birth place up in Oolagah is worth the drive. willrogers.com/birthplace/about/about.html

You MUST eat at the Hammett House and have their pampered fried chicken. I miss eating there. http://www.hammetthouse.com/

I would also recommend driving into Tulsa and seeing the area. I would love to go back out for a visit. Claremore and Green Country holds some very fond memories for me and my husband.

    claremore, OK

    Connie,

I second the visit Tulsa poster...Tulsa is a 20 minute drive from Claremore.

Tulsa%26#39;s downtown area is becoming a fun night-time hang out. It%26#39;s eclectic and has a bigger city feel to it. A couple of good restaurants are Caz%26#39;s Chowhouse, Mexicali Border Cafe and Spaghetti Warehouse. Our new arena, BOK Center is a killer venue to see a concert....

If you do visit Tulsa, steer towards midtown/south Tulsa. Areas from 21st South and farther north are best left to locals comfortable with the area. Not really a safety concern...but just being overly cautious..

Alot of people travel to Tulsa from Oklahoma City, Ponca City, etc to visit Woodland Hills Mall. It%26#39;s a bit crowded at times but has some things that cannot be found elsewhere in the city. Ie: Cheesecake Factory

For a relaxing Saturday afternoon, Lake Oolagah is about 15 minutes from Claremore as well.

About 15 minutes from Claremore is Owasso. Owasso is bigger then Claremore and offers a variety of shopping, movies, bowling, etc. Very clean, safe city for you to spend some time while your husband is at work. (Home to Garth Brooks also)

    Have fun!

    Thanks alot.

I%26#39;ve been to so many new cities and not known anything and find out after we leave what i should have been doing and where i should have gone.

    These posts should help.

    connie

    Connie,

I thought of a couple more things.

    1) Casinos-There are a number of native american operated casinos in the Tulsa area. I have never personally visited one but many of my friends go regularly. There is a very large one along the drive from Claremore to Tulsa (actually in Catoosa). Only negative I have heard is that the smoking areas are a drag..

    2) Riverside Drive - Drive along the Arkansas river for a scenic drive. Can locate the street on a Tulsa map. Runs north and south, the length of the city. At 31st street there is a very nice pedestrian bridge. A romantic walk and then dinner at a brookside restaurant (brookside is an area of town on Peoria between 21st and 51st st south). Several nice, trendy restaurants: The Brooke The Local Table, and my favorite, Cafe Ole.

Geez, I just won%26#39;t quit here!

BBQ seems to be a big thing in the Tulsa area. There are a couple of places that people recommend: Knotty Pine, Elmers, Big Daddy%26#39;s, but my personal favorite is Billy Simms. Several locations around town.

For an absolutely amazing, albeit pricey ($80+ pp) steak, try Mahoganys. It is out of this world.

My husband%26#39;s favorite place to eat in the Tulsa metro area is in Chouteau. It%26#39;s an amish kitchen called the Dutch Pantry. Not a frill in site at the place but they do make fried chicken like momma used to. It%26#39;s a small all you can eat buffet but only has 1 main course offered daily. Closed on Sundays. I think the main course on Saturdays is the fried chicken. They have a US map in the restaurant displaying stick pins marking the hometowns of visitors to the restaurant. You will be amazed at how many out of towners have visited this virtual hole in the wall. A dessert bar comes included with the price of the meal (I think it%26#39;s about $8 pp). Homemade peach, blackberry, apple cobbler. Pecan pie, chocolate cake. They sell dessert to go as you pay...can pick up a 8x8 cake for about $4 to enjoy the rest of the weekend...

There is a fantastic little Mexican Restaurant in Collinsville - just west of Claremore - called Jalapeno Grill. It is closed on Sunday. A modest place but very worth it!! Also go to Tulsa and see Gilcrease Museum, west on Hwy 412, just west of downtown. They have a lot of kid friendly activities.

A modern thing for the kids is the Imax theater at S. Hwy 169 and 71st St. Oklahoma has a lot of festivals, look in the Tulsa World newspaper on Friday and Saturday. Also watch the weather, storms and tornado%26#39;s are possible in the spring but our weathermen do a tremendous job of keeping us safe! It%26#39;s a great area! Enjoy!

  • rest area/playground

I will be traveling east on turner turnpike with a small child that will need to run arouns a bit. What I need to know is there a playgound/rest area after the big Mc D%26#39;s where we could take our ';lunch'; and he could play aa bit? Thanks for your help!

    rest area/playground

There is a service area (Gasoline) just east of the Bristow exit (196) and a pull-over rest stop about 9 miles past Bristow (just east of where Rte 66 and the pike cross.)

I don%26#39;t believe either has a playground, but the rest stop should be a place your son could run around - assuming it%26#39;s not a hangout for undesireables.

    Also...downtown Tulsa attractions.

Depending on what we do in St. Louis and how long we stay there, we may just want to go right into Tulsa and not go out of our way much. So are there any family friendly activities in Tulsa, downtown? Is it recommended to stay in downtown Tulsa? Is there a nice historic area? The oldest really enjoys historic places.

Thanks so much! I look forward to hearing more about Tulsa!

    Also...downtown Tulsa attractions.

I am afraid that I don%26#39;t know much about kids things, I will make myself available for questions and try to help.

The good news is that you are never more than 20 minutes from anything in Tulsa, so being near any attraction is probably not that important. Downtown is still pretty dead after business hours, so you will probably want to go South.

There is a fantastic aquarium in jenks (south tulsa) and a new hotel right next door. this is also walking distance from our river walk with restaurants and some shopping.

We have a couple of fantastic art museums, philbrook and gilcrease. Tulsa%26#39;s history is founded in the oil business. Assuming there is a things to do part of this forum, i won%26#39;t try to repeat it all, but if you get something specific, let us know.

    Also...downtown Tulsa attractions.

The wife and I have stayed at the Crown(e) Plaza a few times. We used Priceline, picked the downtown area, highest rating, and both times got about 1/2 price of any other rate we could find. Found it very nice, great rooms, and excellent service.

    Hope this helps.

Downtown GREAT breakfast spot. The Blue dome Cafe, a few blocks from the Crown! One of those places that should be on ';Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives'; if it hasn%26#39;t been! It is not fancy, but great prices and tons of food for those kids of yours!

Downtown Tulsa features some really terrific art deco architecture. Not sure if that will thrill the kids, but it is pretty cool. You might be able to get a tour of one of the neatest, the Boston Avenue Methodist Church, done in Frank Lloyd Wright style--try to get them to take you up in the tower to the offices! I liked that as a kid.

Since Oklahoma was opened up a little over a century ago, there is not a lot of older historic areas like you might find in an Eastern or Northern big city.

The Crowne Plaza is arguably the best hotel choice in the central core of downtown, as it is the most recently remodeled and is located in the heart of downtown and walking distance to the Blue Dome, recommended in other posts (and an excellent choice for breakfast). Bring ear plugs if train whistles in the middle of the night disturb you, or ask for a room away from the trains (tracks just a couple of blocks on the North side of the hotel). Another interesting option is the Hotel Ambassador, on the South edge of downtown.

While in downtown you might encounter a few panhandlers--not any more than any other cities and easily turned away with a no thank you, can%26#39;t help you comment. While not densely populated, it is safe.

Tulsa has a historic drive-in movie theatre that is open in the summer--the Admiral Twin. Might make a different, historic activity with the kids!

And if the kids (or you) are Jetson%26#39;s fans, the Oral Roberts University campus looks like it was designed by the Jetsons. Futuristic at the time, now kind of historically intriguing particularly if your family is really into religious activities.

Hope you have a nice visit!

Fantastic information here! Wow! Thank you all VERY much! I%26#39;m gonna chat a bit with the kids if they%26#39;d prefer to see Tulsa more downtown or see the Aquarium and stay in Jenks, etc! I%26#39;m very much considering spending 2 days in Tulsa!

    Thanks again all!

Art! I have to laugh at your recommendations of ear plugs...we live alongside train tracks in downtown Chicago, we%26#39;ll feel RIIIIIGHT at home at Crowne Plaza! Ha!

    Tif,

I work in downtown Tulsa and have a 7 year old. I agree there are some fun things to do downtown, but not very many %26#39;kid friendly%26#39; things to keep small children entertained.

The aquarium area is much more conducive to families with kids... Many many more food options. (Really no comparison)

    A couple of other ideas:

If it is a nice day, you would be 20 minutes from the Tulsa Zoo.

If it is an indoor day, you could take them to Tulsa%26#39;s Incredible Pizza.

If they are teen girls, they would probably love Woodland Hills Mall. If they are young kids, there is a Build-A-Bear in the mall.

Head out to our minor league baseball team, The Drillers..

If it is summer, go to Big Splash...

Have a picnic at a park on Riverside and walk the 31st street bridge over the Arkansas river.

If they need to burn off alot of energy, take them to BounceU or PumpItUp...Inflatibles galore. Call for %26#39;open bounce%26#39; times....

    Have fun!

I would have to dissagree, the Doubletree hotel downtown is much better than the Crown Plaza.

I think it is being remodeled starting in June, but for friendly service it would be hard to beat them.

    nearest hotel to BOK

Going to be in Tulsa for the Bruce Springsteen concert on April 7. Would like to be able to walk to the concert if possible. Are there any hotels near where this would be possible? Thank you for your help.

    nearest hotel to BOK

Either the Doubletree Downtown or the Crowne Plaza Downtown will be within easy walking distance of the BOK Center.

    nearest hotel to BOK

I would choose the DoubleTree it is two blocks from the BOK. They also have a trolly that runs from the Hotel to the BOK starting 1 hour before the concert and runs every 15 minutes.

    Mother's Day Brunch

we will be visiting Tulsa for Mother%26#39;s Day, and would like to take out Mother out for brunch. She lives in Owasso - any ideas?

    Mother's Day Brunch

The Osage Restaurant at the Gilcrease Museum used to have a wonderful Sunday brunch, though I haven%26#39;t been there in a few years; the food was excellent and different, and the setting is nice, too. You might want to call to check on Mother%26#39;s Day. http://www.gilcrease.org/osage.aspx

    Mother's Day Brunch

All the bigger hotels in Tulsa have a Mother%26#39;s Day brunch. As well, so do a lot of other restaurants %26amp; venues, i.e. Forest Ridge Golf Club (not so close to Owasso, though). For what is likely to be one of the better Mother%26#39;s Day brunches in Tulsa (and you%26#39;ll pay, of course, but it is Mother%26#39;s Day) I%26#39;d come South (about 15 miles, but it%26#39;s expressway all the way) from Owasso on Hwy. 169 to 71st St. %26amp; go to the Renaissance Hotel, South 71st %26amp; Hwy. 169. Could you give us some road trip ideas of what route we should take so that we can see some interesting sites on the way between Dallas and Oklahoma City.

We like visitng museums, theme parks, wildlife parks etc.

    Thanks

From Dallas to OKC the usual route is I-35 north.

In Arlington - close to Dallas and south of the DFW Airport - there is a theme park called Six Flags over Texas.

    http://www.sixflags.com/overtexas/index.aspx

    That%26#39;s an all-day affair, though.

On the way to OKC, in southern Oklahoma is the Arbuckle Mountain area (admittedly, very small mountains.) There is an animal park there as well as other parks and attractions:

    http://www.arbucklewilderness.com/

    http://www.arbuckles.com/things-to-do/

There is a chocolate factory just off I-35 in Paul%26#39;s Valley (Exit 70 on I-35.)

Further north in Norman, OK is the Sam Noble Museum

    http://www.snomnh.ou.edu/

Very nice place with interesting exhibits.

And in OKC there is Frontier City Amusement Park

    http://www.frontiercity.com/

That%26#39;s just off the top of my head. I%26#39;m sure there will be pleny of other suggestions.

My 7 year old son loves Bricktown in OKC. They have gondola rides that are about 1 mile long. Great little bowling alley, several shops, a movie theater, a spook house, feed the ducks on the river and just leisurely stroll...He has asked me to go there every one of our days off together for the last year!

Here are a couple of suggestions which are right on your way north.

As you are heading north on Interstate Highway 35, take exit 47 and then proceed north on US Highway 77. This will take you on a winding route through the Arbuckle Mountains, some of the oldest mountains in the continent (and hence, very short mountains). You might want to stop at Turner Falls park as you go by http://www.turnerfallspark.com/

As you leave Turner Falls, continue heading north on US 77 and turn right onto Oklahoma Highway 7, which will lead you into the town of Davis where you will find many antique shops. Continue through Davis on OK 7 until you reach the town of Sulphur, where you can follow signs into the Chickasaw National Recreation Area where you will find a nice visitors center, walking trails, a lovely stream, natural springs, etc.

    http://www.nps.gov/chic/

When you%26#39;ve had your fill of nature, just follow OK 7 back through Davis and it will return you to Interstate 35, a few miles north of where you left it.

    Indian doctor

    Hello,

We are enrolled in the indian health system. But, the only time we use them is if it is something minor, because they are known for not having the best doctors. My son has 2 genetic disorders, and I would never, ever think of letting the indian doctors look at my son.

A few rules before using inidan drs. You have to have your CDIB card. Not only that, but you have to be living in the state of Oklahoma in order to use the indian health system.

    Need Hotel Help

Will be driving through Oklahoma City and need a good hotel south of the city along Hwy 35 with an indoor pool so the kids can burn off some energy. Could be an hour or two from Okla City. Looking in the $70.00-$90.00 range

    Thanks for any help.

    Need Hotel Help

Check out the hotels in Norman Oklahoma on Tripadvisor

    tripadvisor.com/Hotels-g51547-Norman_Oklahom…

The only caveat is the Sooner Legends Hotel will be closing very soon, if it hasn%26#39;t already closed.

    Need Hotel Help

Thanks for the help, but is there anything else? I like options.

There smaller towns all along I-35 between OKC and the Texas border. I%26#39;m not familiar with any of them, so I can%26#39;t make any recommendations. I know there is a new Microtel Hotel at the Winstar Indian Casino just before the Texas border.

You could also check for hotels in Pauls Valley, Ardmore and Purcell.

Maybe someone else can make a more specific suggestion.

    :)

After Norman, heading south, you%26#39;re not going to find much until Pauls Valley (about 40 miles), which has a couple of chain places but not much else, and then Ardmore (another 45) which is bigger and has more options, and then Denton, TX (another 75) which is bigger still with even more services.

As for recommending a place with a pool, sorry; I don%26#39;t usually stay in any of those towns.

Thanks for the replies. I had been looking around at the varous towns south of Okla City and they all seem to have outside pools, which I imagine would be closed. I would really like a place with an indoor pool. Maybe I am better off in the metro area, but our final stop is San Antonio and would love to get past Okla City.

To find a hotel with an indoor pool south of OKC, you will probably have to continue on to a town closer to Dallas or Fort Worth - about another 3 to 3.5 hour drive.

And unless you want to stop in Dallas, take the I-35 West turnoff through Ft. Worth - it%26#39;s shorter and usually has slightly less traffic than I-35 East through Dallas.

    Good luck!

Sooner Legends isn%26#39;t closing. They are on the corner of I-35 and Lindsey street in Norman, OK and have been open about 2-3 years. It%26#39;s a great place to stay and very affordable. Their beds are comfy and they have a delicious restaurant on site. I think the Sooner Hotel on OU%26#39;s campus closed about a year or so ago. Maybe this was the reference intended. Hope this clears up the mistake.

Thanks for the update. Around the time I made that original post I had read a story about Sooner Legends getting ready to close. I either misunderstood or they found a way to keep it going. It%26#39;s also possible it was some different %26#39;Sooner Legends%26#39; and not the hotel.

    Sorry for any misunderstanding.

    nice hotel

I am taking a trip from memphis tn to mission viejo ca. I would like a nice CLEAN place to stay for around 100.00.Any help would be appreciated.

    nice hotel

Try the Hilton Garden Inn on Meridian, on the west edge of the city, just south of I-40. I%26#39;ve seen rates there as low as $89 and as high as $129. The Hyatt Place on the same street but farther from I-40 would be another good option.

    nice hotel

If you are coming through on a weekend you will have a fairly large number of choices depending on how far off of I-40 you want to travel. At least a few will be major brands.

In midweek you will be more limited. For a midweek stopover, you can stay at:

Comfort Inn, Founders Tower - 5704 Mosteller Dr, Oklahoma City, OK, 73112, 866-539-0036, A fairly new property about 9 miles north of I-40 and close to I-44. About $85/night in the middle of the week in June

    or

Extended Stay Deluxe Oklahoma City - Northwest, 4811 NW Expressway, Oklahoma City, OK, 73132, 866-539-0036 - about 3 miles west of the Comfort Inn and accessible to I-44 as well. About $75/night in the middle of the week in June.

Check out some hotel offerings at the various reservation sites and if you find somehthing, post back and ask.

And if you are sure of the day - try Priceline and ask for a 4 star hotel at $100/night.

I%26#39;m sorry modcon, but I%26#39;ve got to call you on this one. You usually give great advice, but this just doesn%26#39;t make sense. Going from TN to CA, cc123 is going to be on I-40, so why would you take him up to the northwest side which is both out of his way and sure to get him into morning traffic as he leaves? I%26#39;m sorry, but this just doesn%26#39;t make much sense.

And having stayed in the Hilton and Hyatt I suggested as well as the Comfort Inn you suggested, let me assure you that there is no comparison in quality, amenities, nor condition of the hotels. I spent two nights at the Comfort in December while my wife had surgery across the street; it%26#39;s mediocre at best.

The question concerns clean hotels for $100 or less. If it%26#39;s midweek it will be difficult to find a decent hotel along I-40 for that price - including the ones you listed.

The hotels I mentioned are admittedly budget hotels that lack amenities, but even in the middle of the week they are less (some much less) than $100/night. I checked the hotels you listed - both good choices btw - and the rates were in excess of $100 for a weeknight and around $95-100 (after taxes) on a weekend (Fri/Sat) night.

I agree completely that it is off route to get to the NW side, but by taking I-44/240/Hefner Parkway north to NW Expressway, it can be as short as 15 minutes. (Granted, it can also be as long as 40 minutes depending on the time of day and the chance of an accident. But that%26#39;s a risk on any intracity interstate)

It%26#39;s up to the cc123tn to decide what is more important - money or convenience. I was just trying to give some less expensive alternatives if it%26#39;s money.

And I still think priceline could be a reasonable option if the date is firm.

I hope this clarifies my suggestions.

Fair enough, modcon. You focused on price and the ';clean'; in the message while I focused on the ';nice'; of the subject line and convenience to route. Personally, having stayed in these hotels, I would happily pay $50 extra just to avoid the Comfort Inn Founders Tower and the Northwest Expressway.

I couldn%26#39;t agree more about paying the extra for convenience and amenities. But I try to remember that $50 is at least a couple of tanks of gas (and more for most cars.) I guess I%26#39;m more sensitive to money since I was out of work for some time last year. Maybe too sensitive. lol

In the end, I hope this has all been helpful to cc123tn!

    :)

I would definitely recommend staying in close to I-40 as TwoProfs suggested. This gives you the option of the Meridian hotels as well as the ones in Midwest City. There should be an affordable option among those. You might also look at Yukon, which has a few travel hotels right on I-40 just west of OKC.

Hotel with easy access to AT&T ballpark

Hello. We are going to stop in OKC for one night on the way to Arkansas. We want to see the Memorial and go to the ballgame. Which hotel would be the most convenient to the field. We are hoping we can just walk to the field or I read something about a water taxi. Thanks for any suggestions.

Hotel with easy access to AT%26amp;T ballpark

Probably the most convenient to the ballpark would be the Residence Inn - it%26#39;s also very close to the other attractions in Bricktown.

Other hotels that would be just a little further walk are:

    Courtyard

    Rennaissance

    Skirvin (Hilton historic hotel)

    Sheraton

    Colcord (historic hotel)

These are all in the downtown/bricktown area. Of these, I%26#39;m not as sure about the quality of the Sheraton. I%26#39;m from OKC and haven%26#39;t stayed (except in the Residence Inn one time), but our company is downtown so I get to hear about it from coworkers.

Enjoy your time in OKC - we have a lot to do in the bricktown area these days!

Hotel with easy access to AT%26amp;T ballpark

The closest are going to be the Residence Inn already mentioned and the brand new Hampton in that abuts and overlooks the ballpark. If you get a south-facing room, you can actually see the field, and as far as walking, it%26#39;s just around the corner.

    Inn*

    The water taxi:

    bricktownwatertaxi.com/Oklahoma/OKCHome.Asp

is a %26#39;tour%26#39; of the canal. It does pass close to the ballpark, but if you stay in the downtown area at any of the hotels previously mentioned the ballpark (affectionately called ';The Brick'; and still the best minor league park in the USA), the Memorial, The Water Taxi and other downtown attractions will all be within easy walking distance.

If any of your party has problems getting around, there is also a trolley system:

    www.bricktownokc.org/p/8088/Default.aspx

that covers most of the downtown area.

The limitations may be the cost of the rooms depending on your expected budget.

    Route 66-Help needed

    Hi All,

I am trying to paln a road trip for myself, my husband and my sis for October and need some help.

We have 8 to 10 days to do the route 66, starting in Chicago and ending in LA. I want to make the most of the trip as it will our last holiday for awhile, so I was wondering, where should we stop, what should we see? and where should we stay??

I know there have been loads of posts on Route 66 an dI have been reading through them but I am hoping someone may have done this route in the 8-10 days we have.

Also, is it possible to by-pass the Grand caynon and Las Vegas as we have visited them before? or this there more we should see around the Grand Caynon??

Any help would be so gratefully appreciated.

    Thanks

    Route 66-Help needed

    Whether you want to stop, and how much time you want to spend depends on what you like to do, but here are a few Route 66 quick stops in Oklahoma. You can research them and decide for yourself whether any are of any interest, and how much time you should allow. The Canadian River bridge is just a bridge, but it is long and narrow, and gives an idea of what drivers dealt with ';back in the day.';

Clanton%26#39;s Cafe in Vinita, Oklahoma - Best chicken-fried steak in the country - a true taste of Oklahoma

Will Rogers Museum in Claremore, OK

Canadian River bridge between El Reno and Hydro

Red Rock Canyon State Park near Hinton, OK

National Cowboy Hall of Fame and Western Heritage Center in Oklahoma City

    Oklahoma City Bombing Memorial

Philbrook and Gilcrease Art Museums in Tulsa

As for Grand Canyon and Vegas, if you%26#39;ve already seen the Grand Canyon itself, then I would say that your next trip there should be to spend some time hiking, exploring and visiting the North Rim, which means that you probably won%26#39;t have time for that on this trip. Vegas - Well, Vegas is Vegas - depends on how much you like bright lights and gambling.

In Arizona, Route 66 takes you to Flagstaff, which is nice, but a good side-trip would be to drop down south out of Flagstaff and visit both Sedona and Jerome. Sedona is well-known, but Jerome is just an interesting small town built on the side of a mountain. Sort of spooky to drive through it, but interesting that people chose that spot to build a town. I think it was once an old mining (silver?) town.

    Route 66-Help needed

There are two places on Rte 66 in Arcadia, OK (just north of OKC) that are close together you might want to see.

One is Pops - a (new) gas station/soda fountain/restaurant with an interesting pop-culture/kitschy design.

    http://www.pops66.com/

The other is very close by (just east of Pops) - the Historic Round Barn:

    http://www.arcadiaroundbarn.org

Neither will take much time, but are on some lists of things to do on 66 in OK.

Remember - Oklahoma also has the most original miles of Route 66 left!

    Have fun!

    New LaQuinta Inn

Has anyone stayed at the new LaQuinta Inn? I have heard bad things about Cash Road. We are coming from Fayetteville, NC which is a military town and know there are places you just don%26#39;t go. Thanks for the information

    New LaQuinta Inn

I haven%26#39;t stayed at that LaQuinta but I will say that when I lived in Lawton, just a very fews years ago, that area of CACHE Road was a decent place and I just bet it still is.

    New LaQuinta Inn

It is a brand new hotel. Looks to be very nice, and is in a good part of town. Cache Rd. is the major road in town with a lot of restaurants and businesses.

Thanks everyone for the up date on Lawton. We will enjoy our trip more knowing the place is safe. Thanks again

  • Cab Rates for Tulsa

    Greetngs~

I and a few friends will be coming to Tulsa to attend a show at Cains Ballroom. We plan on taking cabs to and from our hotel. What is the taxi rate for the city?

We don%26#39;t know where we are staying yet, but would love suggestions as well.

I%26#39;d also appreciate suggestions for unique shopping....funky stores, thrift shops, cool local shops %26amp; restaraunts, as well as unusual photo opportunities.

    Thanks!

    Cab Rates for Tulsa

Cab rates in Tulsa are pretty reasonable. Do not take one from the airport though, they will charge something like a 10 dollar fee to leave from the apt. Utica Square has some nice shopping as well as Brookside with a complement of unique stores.

    Cab Rates for Tulsa

The closest hotel to the Cain%26#39;s will be the Crowne Plaza. You could also consider the Doubletree Downtown. Both are very nice. A very cool, very nice place to stay is the Ambassador Hotel, just south of downtown, but it is more expensive.

The Brookside area (Peoria Ave. south of 35th Street), and Cherry Street (15th Street between Peoria and Utica Ave.) both have great local shopping and dining choices, exactly what you are looking for. For more upscale shopping and dining, try Utica Square at 21st %26amp; Utica.

For more info and some other ideas, check out my Tulsa page at www.virtualtourist.com. Have fun a the Cain%26#39;s!

Taxi rates aren%26#39;t all that cheap here compared to other cities. There are several taxi companies and the dispatchers can give you an estimate of your fare when you call for a cab.

Another suggestion for a hotel would be Hotel Savoy, 6th %26amp; Peoria. I haven%26#39;t stayed there yet, but it looks %26amp; sounds cool. I am wanting to learn more about it so if you do stay there, please come back %26amp; write a review on TripAdvisor.

For funky shopping, other posts have good suggestions already. Do try further along 15th Street to the East--lots of small %26amp; unusual shops beyond what is traditionally considered ';Cherry Street.'; Also there is some funky shopping in the Brady District, near Mexicali Restaurant %26amp; Lola%26#39;s At the Bowery.

Photo ops--go to the fairgrounds %26amp; get your picture taken at the foot of the Golden Driller, or go out to Oral Roberts University for a ';Jetson%26#39;s'; style university setting. Or wander out on the pedestrian bridge at 30th %26amp; Riverside %26amp; snap some shots back across the water towards downtown.

I recently took a cab from Tulsa International Airport to my home a distance of approx 10 miles. I got ripped with a $8 airport departure fee + $2 for an extra person + $2 per suitcase (we had 5). The $25 ride to the airport cost me $41.20 to get home.

I forgot to mention my suggestion for you would be to rent a car on your arrival at the airport.

There are many rental agencies within the airport terminal and this would let you get out and about more without restrictions.

Parking around Cains is plentiful either for free or maybe $5.

Have a great time in Tulsa.

Hope I%26#39;m not too late - but if I am, maybe this will help someone else.

Just wanted to mention that cab rates are unregulated and there are no taxis cruising the streets for fares. If you arrive at a reasonable hour there should be a couple waiting at the airport, but from then on you will need to call for every one. Tulsans don%26#39;t really use them at all. Tulsa is sprawling and easy to drive (streets are numerical/alphabetical and laid out in a grid), so I agree with the earlier post - just rent a car! Parking is free other than in the heart of downtown, so it will probably be cheaper and give you more freedom.

Ditto on staying at the Ambassador, it%26#39;s a cute, fashionable boutique hotel with great service.

Restaurant suggestions (also all right next to unique shopping):

    Downtown:

    Tsunami (Sushi) - 2nd %26amp; Detroit

    Brookside:

    AliOli (Tapas) - 36th %26amp; Peoria

    Ciao! (Italian) - 33rd %26amp; Peoria

    Cherry Street:

Hideaway (Pizza) - 15th btwn Utica %26amp; Peoria

    Kilkenny%26#39;s (Irish Pub) - 15th btwn Utica %26amp; Peoria

Additional photo op: Just a couple blocks from the Brady, there%26#39;s a pedestrian bridge that goes over the railroad tracks right next to the old Union Depot. At the top there%26#39;s the ';Center of the Universe'; where you stand on a concrete circle with some weird audio effects, and a strange sculpture called Artificial Cloud that high school kids like to ';ring'; in the middle of the night...the thing to do when my friends and I were young and trying too hard to be weird.

Yes - the Center of the Universe is a great ';only in Tulsa'; idea!

How would you suggest leaving the airport, if not by cab? For instance, today is a holiday, so no bus service. Let%26#39;s say the car rental booths are closed. How in the heck is a traveler/visitor supposed to deal with this?

The Tulsa taxi situation is horrible. But, I applaud you for not wanting to drive to the concert because the cops are just waiting for the drinkers to get out on the streets after a concert.

As stated, you will have to call a taxi and tolerate the dreadful vehicle and driver until you get where you are going and pay way to much for the pleasure.

Most people don%26#39;t know, but if you protest the $8 fee from the airport, they have to take it off the bill.

You do NOT want to stay at the Crown Plaza unless you love the sound of train horns. I have never met anyone that would stay there a second time.

    Frontier City Coupons

Does anyone know the best deals out there to Froniter City? The best I can come up with is the internet price offered on their website for $25.99/person.

    Thanks!

    Frontier City Coupons

I have been there several times and I wouldn%26#39;t waste my money. My passes were free! It is like a ';town fair'; that has overused rides and rundown attractions.

    Frontier City Coupons

That still did not answer the question! Are there any coupons that anyone knows of?

    Thanks,

I have seen an ad on the website from McDonalds for $10.00 off. But have been unable to locate the ad again. Can anyone tell me if there are still coupons in the Oklahoma City area?

    Thanks,

Other than specific admission offers to companies in OKC, or specials for events, since Frontier City left the Six Flags umbrella I haven%26#39;t seen any discount offers available.

Try looking in the Oklahoma City phone books....in the back there are coupons for $10.00 off admission good for up to 6 people. Also Try looking on Coke or Dr. Pepper Cans...they offer the same deal. In the Metro Family magazine ( you get them at the library entrance) they have a $10.00 off coupon as well, good for up to 6 people

Good information to have. I didn%26#39;t realize they were putting the coupons in the back of the phone books!

Is the offer on all Coke cans? I haven%26#39;t seen any with them this summer, so I assumed they had dropped that when they left Six Flags.

And the other source is sometimes hard to find, but thanks for the location.

I%26#39;ve had several people ask about discounts this summer, but was always able to help them with discount passes from my employer. This is another avenue for them.

This may be a little late, but all the 7-11s have coupons. Also the state tourism website usually has coupons for Oklahoma sites. Not sure if Frontier City is on there, but it%26#39;s worth a look.

    %26lt;a href=';www.oklahoma-city-life.com/frontier-city.html';%26gt;Frontier City%26lt;/a%26gt;

We found a great deal at travelok.com. There%26#39;s a coupon for up to 6 people at $17.99 plus tax per person. Better than anything we could find. We printed an extra one to hand out to somebody else in line waiting to purchase tickets.

Lodging and things to do at Grand Lake

Hi...i live in OKC and have never been to Grand Lake in Oklahoma. My friends and i are thinking about going there for 4th of July this year. Is there a good lodging/cabins rental you would recommend? Also is there a certain part of the lake we should be at? we%26#39;re a group of mid and late 20s...so there%26#39;ll be lots of drinking and loud music playing. Thanks for your help.

Lodging and things to do at Grand Lake

If you have a boat, go to Dripping Springs. There you will find lots of boats and partiers all tied up together, such that you can simply walk from boat to boat. It can get rowdy and loud.

If you don%26#39;t have a boat, you can go to and stay in the hotel at Shangri-La. There will be lots happening there over the July 4th period.

Lodging and things to do at Grand Lake

Oops. After I wrote the previous post, I decided to check on Shangri La, just to make sure it was still in operation. It has changed hands many times over the years, and never seemed to be able to remain viable. Apparently, it is no longer in operation (as a hotel) and they are building a new resort there, The Peninsula, which is not yet complete. So, you probably won%26#39;t be able to stay there. There are various little motels in Grove, or you could camp in one of the campsite/parks around the lake, but be sure to stake out your spot early. There will be lots of people, and the entire lake will be very busy. Also, in the campsites, there will be families with kids and others who may not appreciate your drinking and loud music. Locals often leave town during the summer holidays, because the noise and activity can be constant. The lake is really not that safe during July 4th, because of the heavy boat traffic. Frankly, if it was me, I would go some time other than July 4th - especially if you don%26#39;t have a boat. But if you do have a boat, or can befriend a boat owner, Dripping Springs on July 4th is something to see.

mimiAir, thank you for posting on the Grove/Grand Lake forum.

Basically, there are two choices for people in their late 20s with plans for lots of drinking and loud music and both involve boating...either by jet ski or a boat. As the previous poster responded, Dripping Springs is the first and ';best';, but there is another place called Woodward Hollow. Most of the noisy crowd stays in the front part and party till dusk. The older crowd goes around the bend toward the back where it%26#39;s quieter. In both places, the boats tie up together and form a long line of boats, everyone jumps in the lake, and floats, drinks and listens to music all day, also going from boat to boat visiting.

If you go to either place, your best bet if you don%26#39;t want to camp is Serenety Point. They rent out rooms, rent boats and jet skiis, have a gas pump, and have a minimum supply of food, ice, and beverages.

Most importantly...please be safe! As the other poster indicated, the 4th of July is a time when there are many boaters out and about and driving drunk. Most of us full time Grand Lakers don%26#39;t even get our boats out during the 4th weekend : ) Let me know if I can further assist you.

I should add for others who may read this thread in the future. The reason I suggested Serenity Point for lodging is its location is between Woodward Hollow and Dripping Springs on that side of the lake.

Thanks Spyderwood and Bips for the quick response. Neither one of us has a boat to bring out there so looks like we%26#39;ll be renting one. how much do you think it%26#39;ll cost us for renting it for 2 days?

Depending on what type of boat and how long you would keep it, for example it would cost you $60 per hour for 8-9 hours according to their website, www.serenitypointllc.com. They also list their accommodation prices. Call them at 918-786-5242 for more information.

    Parking in Bricktown vs Taxi

Hello. We can%26#39;t really get a good deal on a hotel in Bricktown so will be staying at the Hyatt Place NW. We are going to a game at the ballpark and I%26#39;m wondering if trying to park our car downtown would be a pain or if we should just take a cab from the Hyatt Place(about 4 miles). Not sure if there are alot of cabs around. I know here in Dallas/Ft. Worth cabs are not easily available.

    Thanks!

    Parking in Bricktown vs Taxi

There is plenty of parking in the Bricktown/Downtown area. Just north of the ballpark is a multi-story parking garage. If you get there early enough, you may be able to find parking on the street (just feed the meter.) And there are many other for-pay parking lots both in Bricktown and in the rest of the downtown area.

The biggest gripes I%26#39;ve heard about parking are not enough free parking and some of the for-pay lots are not that convenient to the ballpark (they require a slight walk - between 1/4 and a 1 mile.)

The biggest problem with taking a car into Bricktown is the traffic after the game. While it is better than it was a year ago, it will still take awhile to get out if you intend to head back to the hotel immediately after the game. But if you hang around awhile it%26#39;s not bad at all...

All-in-all, it would be less expensive to park at even the most expensive lot than to take a cab round trip. And since you are from the DFW area, you shouldn%26#39;t be bothered too much by the after-game traffic.

The main thing about driving to a game - don%26#39;t wait until the last minute. But that%26#39;s good advice even if you intend to eat at one of the restaurants prior to the game.

I hope this helps you decide...

    :)

    Parking in Bricktown vs Taxi

Ok, so I guess the parking isn%26#39;t terribly expensive? I thought I read somewhere that it was about 20.00 to park in Bricktown. And 4 miles in a taxi didn%26#39;t sound too expensive, but I didn%26#39;t really take into account sitting in traffic and how that would run the fare up. I guess we will just drive it.

    Thanks!

Oh no, $20 is a gross overestimate. I think special event rates for some lots have gotten maybe up to $15 on literally maybe one or two occasions. I definitely agree that you should drive rather than taking a cab.

Just go straight to the parking garage on the north side of the ballpark. It%26#39;s only $5 and even with the addition of the attached 9-story Hampton Inn, there are always spots there. IMO it%26#39;s not worth your time to drive around the free lots south of Reno Ave. hoping for a spot to open up, and some of the other pay lots can get up to $10. Definitely go with the garage.

Also, traffic on a game night, especially if it%26#39;s the weekend, is going to be bad, but I recommending coming early and staying late. There%26#39;s PLENTY to do both before and after the game with Bricktown as your home base, and that way you avoid the traffic a little. Just don%26#39;t wait til right at 2 am, naturally.

    Enjoy your visit!

    i recommend coming*

Great. We will definitely just drive in and look for the garage near the Hampton. The game is actually on a Monday so traffic hopefully won%26#39;t be too much of an issue. Thanks!

The garage is literally on the north side of the Brick - the two are separated by an alley. You can (and people do) watch games from the third level on up. It won%26#39;t be difficult to find.

    :)

    Enjoy the game!
