Will be traveling from eastern Arizona to Hot Springs, AR for July 4th festivities and need a hotel along the way. Would like to make it to one of these cities the first day then spend the night at a clean, safe hotel and have a place for dinner Stayed in Elk City last year - the Ramada was in horrible condition. The Holiday Inn there is $110/night and we need two rooms, so thought Erick or Sayre might be a better choice.
Thanks in advance for your suggestions and help!
Erick, Sayre or Elk City?I would just push onto OKC, it isn%26#39;t that much farther.
Mike in Tulsa
Erick, Sayre or Elk City? Thanks, Mike, for your reply. That would mean a 780 mile day and we%26#39;ll lose 2 hours going east (we don%26#39;t do daylight savings time in AZ). Not sure I can face 13 hours in a car that day. Sayre would be 650 which is still a long day. I have the feeling we%26#39;ll want to get off the road.
It has been 5 yrs since we were in Erick, but the motel was new and the Rafter T a good place to eat, but not fancy. Home of Monte Wooley %26amp; Roger Miller, not that it counts for anything.
Unfortunately, $100 a night is pretty standard these days for a decent property. Any less, and you%26#39;re getting the Ramada Inns of the world: nice hotels from the 1960s that need a lot of updating. That said, there%26#39;s a nearly new Hampton Inn in Clinton. Probably will cost as much as the HI in Elk City, but it%26#39;s an option.
One exception to the $100 rule, I%26#39;ve found, is Microtel. Very plain and very bare bones, Microtels are mostly newer and almost always well kept. There%26#39;s a Microtel in Hinton, OK, about 70 miles east of Elk City.
You might also look into Shamrock, TX, which has always been a stopping point on the Mother Road, though I don%26#39;t know what options you%26#39;ll find there.
Thanks, everyone! I checked into Clinton - all the hotels are booked for that night. Can%26#39;t imagine what%26#39;s going on in Clinton, Ok!!! Have booked two rooms at AmericInn in Sayre for $80/nt. It gets decent reviews and there seem to be a few restaurants that would suit us. Will post review upon our return.
AmericInn is a good place to stay. Built a couple of years ago and seems to stay pretty busy. A great place to eat is Simons Catch, which is west of Elk City located at the Merrit road exit. About a 15 minute drive from Sayre. All you can eat catfish and trimming%26#39;s, or excellent steaks.
Thanks for the tip about Simon%26#39;s Catch! I miss my fried catfish out here in AZ. Have made note of the exit and will look forward to it!
