I am coming to Tulsa from the UK in October, and was wondering about car hire. Is it cheaper to book a car in advance or can I just turn up at the airport and get the same price for car hire.

I would book in advance; otherwise, you run the risk that cars will not be available. Use a booking engine like Expedia.com or Orbitz.com to compare the different vendors; but if you book at the company%26#39;s own web page, you won%26#39;t need a credit card in advance. That way, you can keep shopping for a better deal, right up until your departure.

The %26#39;walk-up%26#39; rates for most car rental companies are often a lot higher than the %26#39;advanced reservation%26#39; rates. Like airlines, a lot of car companies offer their best rates if you book at least 3 weeks in advance - and unlike the airlines you can always cancel a car rental reservation with no penalty.

So, book ahead and monitor the rate and cancel the old reservation and rebook if you can get it for less.

Two important points:

1. When comparing rates, make sure the quoted rate includes ALL fees. Car rental companies, like airlines, have ';additional fees'; that can drive the rate up significantly.

2. Make sure you understand when the car must be returned. Returning the car after the designated time can result in additional hours/days being charged, which also drives up the final rate. And there will be one, though how it%26#39;s calculated will vary from company to company.

I should have said that three weeks in advance usually gets the better rate, but check right up until the last minute. Sometimes late deals are posted that can save you significant money.
