Any ideas?

We are travelling to Oklahoma in July with the children for a couple of weeks but while we are there we want to travel away for a few days (not more than two hours flight). Somewhere the children will never forget.

Any recommendations?

Any ideas?

Do you know how hot it is in Oklahoma in July? Very.

For travels, I have three suggestions.

Fly to Denver, rent a car, and drive into the mountains. The American Rockies are spectacular, especially if your children have never seen 14,000 foot mountains.

Fly to Chicago, one of America%26#39;s two or three best cities (along with New York and San Francisco in my opinion, but the only one within two hours). Chicago has great museums, a beautiful location right on Lake Michigan, and fantastic cultural and shopping opportunities.

Any ideas?

One of the problems with OKC is that you can hardly fly anywhere from there, without making at least one intermediate stop, so that alone makes a two-hour time limit difficult. Agree with Twoprofs, that of the locations that are within 2 hours, Denver and Chicago are probably the most interesting large cities. I would offer Colorado Springs as an alternative to Denver, especially since you seem more concerned with entertaining the kids than shopping, etc. There are direct flights to Co. Springs, and it is a smaller city, with easier access to the mountains. In the vicinity are Pike%26#39;s Peak, The Royal Gorge and Garden of the Gods. You can also drive (without having to go too far) to locations where river rafting trips are available. Here%26#39;s one example, although I%26#39;ve never used them, so can%26#39;t endorse them, but it%26#39;s just to give you an idea. http://www.lostpaddlerafting.com/

Also, the trip to the mountains from Co Springs is just much easier than going from Denver. On the other hand, if you wanted to go to a major ski resort and let the kids enjoy all the summer alpine activities that most of them have in place these days, then Denver might be the better choice. To access the large resorts, Denver is closer than Colo Springs. Winter Park is probably the closest large resort from Denver, and they have Alpine slides and other activities there to entertain the kids, plus it%26#39;s a nice little village with some decent dining and hotel options. You can check their website for more info skiwinterpark.com/todo/…index.htm

By the way, I also agree that, after spending some time in OKC in July, you will likely be wanting a break from the heat, and Colorado is going to be the best place for that.

I agree with what Spyderwood said about Colorado Springs, except I am unable to find any direct flights between the two cities. As a result, flight time is 3 to 4 hours. If you%26#39;re OK with the longer flight, then do the Springs. If you want to keep the flight brief, fly into Denver and drive to Estes Park for a great mountain experience.

Twoprofs could be right there. I didn%26#39;t actually check the flight schedules. I know there were direct flights in the past, but maybe now there aren%26#39;t. Oh well, just some thoughts. Estes Park is beautiful, and there are things there for the kids as well, such as horseback riding, rafting, fishing, etc. For any trip to Colorado, however, I would recommend that you make your lodging reservations as early as possible. It is a popular summertime destination and the good places fill up fast.

Tks for all the information.

Have plenty to look into now.

Go to Jenks, which is really part of Tulsa. The aquarium is nice, and a Holiday Inn Express is located right next to it. The Arkansas River runs behind it. If you enjoy taking walks, you%26#39;ll love this location. Also, the aquarium is near the River Walk Crossing (Shopping Center). Downtown Jenks has some nice antique stores, and the area is quaint and pretty. The Tulsa Zoo is nice, also. The weather is warm in the summer, but it%26#39;s not usually unbearable.

Not sure where you are traveling FROM. But I personally love Oklahoma in July. You should get an Oklahoma Travel guide. The kids would enjoy both Frontier City and White Water in Oklahoma City. Turner Falls and Arbuckle Wilderness in Davis would be fun also.

Branson, MO is not too far away. That is gorgeous country and LOTS of Family Fun including Silver Dollar City!

Good luck and welcome to Oklahoma!

Chickasaw National Recreation Area or Nearby

Hi, I am wondering if anyone has been here or to some of the water recreation areas nearby and can tell me if there is wading or if this is mostly swimming/deep water.

I am planning a camping trip with family - preferably not far from north Texas but would love some area that has water that isn%26#39;t too deep as have people that can%26#39;t swim due to injury. I%26#39;ve been searching on the web but it%26#39;s all pretty generic information so can%26#39;t tell for sure. Thanks.

Chickasaw National Recreation Area or Nearby

Have you been to the National Park Service web page? That little water fall on the front page is on Travertine Creek, which might be just what you%26#39;re looking for. One section, called Little Niagara, makes for some great wading or water-sitting. Not deep at all unless we%26#39;ve had hard rains.

Another area you might be interested in is Turner Falls, which is operated by the city of Davis, a bit east of CNRA. They have a large water fall, a couple of natural swimming areas, wading area, trails, cabins, etc. http://www.turnerfallspark.com/

Several Questions

I have several questions about going to beavers bend, we have been before but I think we were missing out on some fun things!

1. When will it be warm enough to come! Im ready like yesterday lol

2. So if we stay in Broken Bow will we be close enough to Beaver%26#39;s Bend?

3. I didnt see any resturants at all while we were there last time?

4 Best cheap cabins? We are all 21 in a group of 4 two couples, want to be close to the river/lake for sure

5 where do we go to hike? Canoe?

6 Is there anywhere to tube?

Ok I know this is alot but all of your help is so so appreciated! Im very very excited to come back this summer!!

Several Questions

Also I need addresses so that I can mapquest things and have directions we are coming from Mineola, TX

Several Questions

If you go to www.beaversbend.com they can answer a lot of your questions. They have clean, rustic inexpensive cabins. The office has pamphlets on what to do in the area %26amp; there is a notebook in each cabin. There are restaurants all around. Even the one in the park is quite good %26amp; very reasonable. The park is on the river, you have to drive to the lake but they will give you a map, if you need it. The town, Broken Bow is about 10 mi from the lake. Beaver%26#39;s Bend is in the loop 259A that loops around %26amp; comes back out farther N on 259. You pass both of those %26amp; take one of the roads to the lake, Like Steven%26#39;s Gap.

You can swim here anytime after the first of May. We have been receiving record rainfalls and the lake and Beaver%26#39;s Bend is currently closed. They have been releasing water out of the spillway to try and get the lake down some. I live here and I canoe the lower Mountain Fork 3-4 times a week during the summer but it may be awhile before we can go with the releases being so high and the dangers involved. You can do a google search on McCurtain County, Broken Bow, or Beavers Bend and get lots of information. There are hundreds of private cabins in this area for rent. There are lots of places to eat in Broken Bow, Idabel, and near the lake. I suspect you haven%26#39;t done very much research on your questions. You can tube on Broken Bow lake behind a boat or you can tube down Mountain Fork or Glover River. Lots of water sports to do in this area. The David Boren Hiking Trail is a popular place to hike and it has many options as to lenght and difficulty. You might try www.mccurtaincountygetaways.com or there are some links off of www.pine-net.com. PM me if you need any more details. I would be glad to take you on a float trip while you are here.

  • AT&T Bricktown Ballpark

I am trying to decide whether or not to buy Dave Matthews Band tickets at the AT%26amp;T Ballpark. Before I spend that much money on these tickets (about $160!), I wanted to know what the sound was like in the ballpark. It is a huge place and I figured the sound for a concert would be horrible. Is it good, bad? Give me your reviews please.

    AT%26amp;T Bricktown Ballpark

Since how good a band sounds in a stadium depends on the equipment and their stage setup, which is normally supplied by the band, this is not an easy question to answer.

I%26#39;ve heard good sound at the Brick and mediocre sound there as well. But I%26#39;ve never seen Dave Matthews at an outside venue and I can%26#39;t say how their sound equipment handles an outside event. And I definitely can%26#39;t say how the DMB sound people will handle the Brick. But as many shows as the DMB do outside they should be able to get good sound there. Overall it%26#39;s actually a pretty decent venue for music. And the roadies have time to set it up right since the Redhawks are away from home starting 8/11 and not back until 8/14.

  • Tulsa airport to Broken Arrow?

    Hi,

Can anyone give me some advice on how to get to Broken Arrow from Tulsa airport? I am arriving on a weeknight, late flight.

    Thank you!

    Tulsa airport to Broken Arrow?

Broken Arrow is a suburb of Tulsa. You will probably need to get a taxi or rent a car. There are public busses, but night time routes are limited. Go to Tulsatransit.org to get info on busses. Of course, even if you can get to Broken Arrow on the bus, then you%26#39;ve got to figure out a way to get from the bus stop to your hotel, or wherever you are staying. If you are not comfortable getting a rental car and driving in a strange location at night, then a taxi will be your best bet. It will likely cost $35 or $40 to get from the airport to Broken Arrow by taxi, and if you are arriving late, when traffic is not bad, the trip should take about 30 - 40 minutes.

    Tulsa airport to Broken Arrow?

You%26#39;ll need to rent a car or take a taxi.

Taxi%26#39;s are kind of expensive in Tulsa; the dispatcher for any of the cab companies should be able to estimate the fare for you when you call them to order a taxi, or if you just get one @ the airport the driver should be able to estimate the fare before you get in the cab. All cab fares will be similar.

The major car rental companies all serve the Tulsa airport.

Driving in Tulsa from the airport to Broken Arrow is very easy. You%26#39;ll take Highway 11 East to I-244 East to Hwy. 169 South (beware, likely construction) to Hwy. 51 East (affectionately known as the Broken Arrow Expressway, as it runs from the middle of Broken Arrow diagonally to downtown Tulsa. You can use any of the major mapping programs (i.e., Yahoo Maps) or get a map from the car rental company and ask the clerk to show you the route on the map.

    Welcome to Tulsa!

Tulsa has very affordable rental car rates especially on the weekends. Check out Dollar and Alamo. You really need a car in Oklahoma to get around.

Do not try to use the buses to get around. Rental cars are your best bet. Tulsa and Broken Arrow are extremely easy because of the highway system here. The cities are not very big compared to other U.S. cities. 7:30 a.m. - 8:30 a.m. and 5:0o p.m.-6:30 p.m. are the only really busy times with traffic. Exit and roadway signs are posted and easy to find. Drive if you can.

    Bricktown on Memorial Day Weekend

Hello all. Could use some expert advice. Planning on staying in OKC on Memorial Day Weekend. Never been there before. Heard good things about Bricktown and we decided we want to stay at a hotel IN Bricktown so we could walk to everything. It%26#39;s a family of four consisting of myself, my wife, our 11 yr old son, and 7 yr old daughter. Any help would be appreciated. The other posts IO%26#39;ve read are much older so things may have changed. Thanks in advance.

    Bricktown on Memorial Day Weekend

The hotels available within walking distance of bricktown (anywhere from 1 to 6 blocks) are (in general order of quality IMO):

THE SKIRVIN HILTON, 1 Park Ave, Oklahoma City, OK 73102, 800-804-6835

COLCORD HOTEL, 15 N. Robinson, Oklahoma City, OK 73102, 405-601-4300

COURTYARD BY MARRIOTT, 2 W Reno Ave, Oklahoma City, OK 73102, 800-804-6835

RENAISSANCE, 10 N Broadway Ave, Oklahoma City, OK 73102, 800-804-6835

RESIDENCE INN, 400 E Reno Ave, Oklahoma City, OK 73104, 800-804-6835

SHERATON, 1 N Broadway Ave, Oklahoma City, OK 73102, 800-804-6835

None of these will be inexpensive, especially on a holiday weekend. Check Tripadvisor and Hotels.com for customer comments.

One word of caution: If you truly want to be inside Bricktown so you don%26#39;t have to take out the car, beware of hotels advertising themselves as %26#39;Bricktown%26#39;. Many of them are two or more miles away. Check Mapquest for directions from the hotel address to the AT%26amp;T Bricktown Ballpark, 2 S. Mickey Mantle Drive, Oklahoma City, OK 73104. If it%26#39;s close to that it%26#39;s close to Bricktown.

    Good luck!

    Bricktown on Memorial Day Weekend

Thanks!! That was very helpful and I will definitely look into your suggestions. I heard about the evil Bricktown Hotel which is nowhere near Bricktown, but thanks for the warning.

The Bricktown Hotel and Convention center is about two miles away - and not through some of the better neighborhoods, so it%26#39;s not exactly what I would call walking distance. But they do have a shuttle and from recent reports the renovated rooms really are nice. (A local radio station had an event there last weekend and some of the people I know that work at the station and stayed the night thought the place was ';nice.';)

But lately there appears to be a lot more hotels adding %26#39;Bricktown%26#39; in their descriptions or as %26#39;convenient to%26#39;.

    :)

Just the same, I%26#39;m going to play it safe and avoid the Bricktown Hotel. Shuttle or not, I%26#39;m not going to put my family in a bad area.

Modcon, could you you or someone else list the hotels you mentioned by distance to Bricktown. Thanks in advance. I%26#39;m almost certain it will be one of those we will go for.

From the hotels to the intersection of Sheridan and Oklahoma Ave, the distances are:

THE SKIRVIN HILTON: About .4 mile (4 blocks)

COLCORD HOTEL: About .3 mile (3 blocks)

COURTYARD BY MARRIOTT: About .3 mile (3 blocks)

RENAISSANCE: About .2 mile (2 blocks)

RESIDENCE INN: About .4 mile (4 blocks) - although this hotel is techinically IN Bricktown.

SHERATON: About .3 mile (3 blocks)

In reality, each hotel is a 10-minute or less leisurely walk to the heart of Bricktown

I%26#39;ll just add a couple of items to Modcon%26#39;s excellent information. First, having stayed in both, I would say that the rooms at the Colcord are larger and more well appointed than the rooms at the Skirvin, but the public area amenities are much more user friendly at the Skirvin. Both are excellent old hotels which have recently undergone extensive renovations, but 4 people in my room at the Skirvin would have been tight.

Second, regarding distance, only Courtyard and Residence Inn are actually within the boundaries of the area known as Bricktown. The others are across the tracks, in the downtown area. The walks are short and easily negotiated, but if you%26#39;re wanting to be right in the middle of things, only two hotels qualify.

I agree with twoprofs. The Courtyard and Residence are the only ones actually %26#39;in Bricktown%26#39; and the closests hotels to the ballpark. But IMO the Renaissance and Sheraton are not any further from the main entertainment area of Bricktown.

I do want to say one thing regarding the ';across the tracks'; comment - just to be clear, the tracks twoprofs mentioned are elevated and you walk under them on sidewalks along the streets that lead into Bricktown from the West.

I thought saying across the tracks would give the wrong impression unless you are familiar with the area.

    :)

Finally, from a central location standpoint, the Colcord and Skirvin are probably better. They are pretty equidistant to not only to Bricktown, but also the Murrah Bombing memorial (http://www.oklahomacitynationalmemorial.org), the OKC Museum of Art (www.okcmoa.com), the Central Library (www.mls.lib.ok.us/mls/mls_library/dn.htm), the Myriad Gardens/Crystal Bridge (http://www.myriadgardens.com/index.html), and other downtown attractions, including the Automobile Alley district (http://www.automobilealley.org).

Have fun! There really is a lot to see and do in our fair city.

Spot on, modcon. I meant ';across the tracks'; literally, not metaphorically; sorry for any unintended implications. I%26#39;ve walked the area many times and do not worry for my safety, either inside or outside Bricktown itself.

And yes, hotel distances are about equal. I was merely pointing out the difference between being ';inside'; the Bricktown action and being ';near by.'; Personally, I can think of a number of reasons why ';near by'; would be preferable; I just wanted thullraven to know the difference. I didn%26#39;t mean to disagree with you, only to provide some additional information.

    twoprofs

I never thought you were disagreeing. I just wanted to make sure Thullraven understood the layout of the area. I wasn%26#39;t even thinking of the negative meaning %26#39;accross the tracks%26#39; has. I was more concerned about making sure he knew it was an elevated and not an at grade crossing.

And I totally agree with the ';In and Out of Bricktown'; difference. Personally, if I was coming from out of town and price wasn%26#39;t an issue and a room was available, I%26#39;d stay at the Colcord or Skirvin any day.

    :)

    Ponca City area

We need to attend a dog show in Ponca City around the end of April. We have never been in the area. Any tips on where or where not to stay with 2 golden retrievers? Would be willing to stay within a half an hour or so of town.

    Thanks

    Ponca City area

    Hello,

Hope this is not too late for replying your message.

As I lived in Ponca city for few years, I would choose ';North 14th Street'; area when I look for a hotel in Ponca city.

I looked up on one of hotel website, it shows ';comfort inn and suits'; where is on North 14th Street, it also accepts dogs for a fee.

Also there is a ';Fairfield inn'; on the North 14th Street, you might like to check it out too.

There are couple pretty good eating places in town:

Head country bbq where is by wal-mart.

Enrique%26#39;s Mexican restaurant by the airport, they have great home made chips, very yummy.

Ok ladies and gents (especially you Al)lol. I%26#39;m back this year looking for some cabins. Would anyone be able to give me this info:

I need a list of every cabin on Lucian Sorrel rd starting with the closest to Timber Rock Cabin. We are planning our trip again. We usually have one large cabin and have two satellite cabins. Everyone eats and hangs out at the large one, but we are having issue finding all the cabins on this road.

We have found: Lone Star Cabin, and are looking for 2 or 3 br cabins similar but maybe a little more nice. Any help is appreciated.

My friend lives in Choctaw, OK. I plan to visit in the first week of June. What can we do that would be fun in OKC. I was looking at Bricktown and shopping in Penn Square Mall, but what else is there?

2 old High School Girlfriends mtg in OKC!

What do you like to do besides shop, eat and drink?

    :)

Seriously, what are you interested in and what kind of money are you wanting to leave in our fair city?

2 old High School Girlfriends mtg in OKC!

Bricktown is fun, but not the only thing to do in OKC. I would suggest watching the sunset at one of the restaurants out on lake hefner....Red Rock, Louie%26#39;s on the lake, or Pearl%26#39;s Lakeside. There are usually several sailboats out on the lake. Very nice setting.

Penn Square Mall is nice. I also love shopping at Northpark Mall. Love the Ritz, Lime Leopard, and the Shoe Gallery!

Depending on how much you are willing to spend, there are other great shopping places and other things to do. Let me know if you have any more questions.

    Hotel Recommendation

I will be visiting Tulsa in June. I havn%26#39;t been to Tulsa in 20 years. Where is a good hotel to stay? I%26#39;m looking for very clean and a safe location. A new or newer hotel would be perfect! Thanks.

    Hotel Recommendation

The two nicest hotels in Tulsa right now are the Ambassador (just South of downtown) and the Renaissance (71st %26amp; Hwy. 169); I%26#39;m sure you can find both on the web. The Doubletree South (61st %26amp; Yale) is also pretty nice.

    Hotel Recommendation

There are alot of hotels along 71st street which is in the area of Woodland Hills Mall and Highway 169. We usually stay at the Residence Inn, Springhill Suites, Hampton Inn or Fairfield Inn. Staybridge Suites just opened about 2 years ago - it is nice too.

    Turner Falls?

Our family is planning a summer vacation at Turner Falls (Davis,OK) (My husband and I and four children ages 8,10,12,14)

I%26#39;ve been looking on the internet and was really surprised at the high prices for lodging (even for run-down cabins)

Does anyone have any information/recommendations for this area?

    Turner Falls?

Hello our family tries to atleast go once a year to turner falls, this summer we will be staying at turner falls inn, they have private cabins and rooms for rent, they are reasonably priced and kept clean, but you have to bring your own food an cooking supplies other then that they are very well kept, but not too froofroo, they have a website....turnerfallsinn.com you should check them out.

    Turner Falls?

My mother and I used to go there every March and stay for a week. We stayed in the little cabin across from the water-covered bridge. In fact, it%26#39;s the cabin pictured first on the website. It would be too small for you guys, it only has 2 full size beds. It was only $50 per day then! Now, I think it might be $75. Also, they now charge a per person per day fee even if you are renting a cabin inside the park! It is a wonderful place to go, but the price increases have kept us from going back. I would suggest staying somewhere nearby and then just spending your days in the park, especially since you have to pay the park fees daily anyway.

Also, you said you%26#39;re going in the summer. It will be SO CROWDED then and the people that seem to flock to Turner Falls these days are the kind that like to throw trash on the ground. It was really bad when me and my husband went a summer or so ago (we only live 20 miles from there). We even found a suitcase lying on the ground that someone apparently decided they didn%26#39;t need anymore. I personally wound not stay there in the summer because of the crowds. I%26#39;m not trying to poo-poo on your vacation idea, but I%26#39;d hate to see you spend all that money and then be disappointed!

Hotel on or near route 66 Tulsa

    Hi,

My husband and I will travel the mother road this september. Since we are a little restricted in time, I%26#39;m doing a lot of planning ahead.

I already booked all the hotels, except for Tulsa. Can anyone recommend me a nice hotel/motel on or near R66 in a safe neighbourhood?

Hotel on or near route 66 Tulsa

For a very comfortable, safe place, try the Savoy Hotel on South Peoria in Tulsa. Not a ';classic'; Route 66 motel, but will be a nice safe place to stay (I have stayed there before and I do live less than 2 km away, so I do know the neighborhood). Website is www.tulsasavoy.com.

Hotel on or near route 66 Tulsa

thx...I%26#39;ve read about the Savoy (I%26#39;m not looking for the R66-classics, but just want a good night sleep)

Just in case they don%26#39;t have a room... how about the Doubletree downtown or the Great Western (used to be rammada inn)?

The Great Western/Downtown Tulsa Hotel is undergoing substantial renovation so I can%26#39;t give any guidance until that%26#39;s completed. The Crowne Plaza is also completing renovations (downtown Tulsa is renovating substantially as the completion date for the new BOK Center approaches) so I can%26#39;t give any guidance about it, either.

The Doubletree Downtown is OK; Doubletree South is even nicer (61st %26amp; Yale).

If price is not a concern, the Ambassador Hotel is probably the nicest hotel in the downtown area. Website: www.hotelambassador-tulsa.com.

Downtown Tulsa is a pretty safe neighborhood. Other than the occasional panhandler (and I get panhandled less than 1x/month--and I work downtown and live a mile south of downtown), I have no concerns about safety there despite the concentration of services for the homeless provided by various charities just North of the main downtown area.

Junction, TX to Madison, WI -- HOW???

I%26#39;ve got to drive my mother%26#39;s furniture from Junction, Texas to Madison, Wisconsin in June. Totally unfamiliar with the roads. Any suggestions as to best route would be greatly appreciated. I won%26#39;t have much time, but if there%26#39;s a MUST SEE that can be seen from the truck, please let me know. And about how long I will take me to drive it.

    Thanks.

Junction, TX to Madison, WI -- HOW???

Check out Mapquest and use both the shortest time and shortest distance options. The shortest time is 20 hours and the shortest distance is about 21 hours. Personally, I would take the shortest distance because it is mostly interstate highways.

An option not given by Mapquest is to head East from Junction to Austin and then take I35 north from there. It adds less than an hour the trip but it shortens further the US and State highways and puts 90%+ of the trip on Interstates.

This is pretty much their rock-bottom price. I%26#39;ve never seen a discount coupon generally available. Even my company, which offers a $10 discount on the one day passes charges the full season pass price.

Frontier city , Whitewater bay seasson passes

Too late for this year but next year try getting them in December. I got mine then for $49.00 plus tax. They always go up in price as they get closer to opening day.

    Bricktown Hotel & Convention Center

Does anyone know anything about this hotel? Their website makes it sound very nice. I have seen bad and good comments about online. I would appreciate any info.

    Bricktown Hotel %26amp; Convention Center

I have not been there for quite awhile, and the last time is was pretty run down. I%26#39;ve read they are doing renovations since I was last there but I have not seen them and can%26#39;t say how they are turning out.

However, the area of town is still a little ';run-down'; and there is a truck stop right across the street from the hotel. Last time I was in the area I still didn%26#39;t notice a whole lot around the hotel.

It%26#39;s convenience to Bricktown is based on the fact you just get on Reno Ave. and head west about a mile. And they do have a shuttle.

However, the more recent reviews have overall been very good, so they may have turned the place around. But that also appears to be based on whether or not you get one of the renovated rooms...

As an OKC Resident, I would not stay there since I would be looking for more amenities and a very nice place to stay if I was looking to get away for a night.

    Bricktown Hotel %26amp; Convention Center

I don%26#39;t recommend it. It%26#39;s kind of shady, and the name is very deceptive. It%26#39;s NOT in Bricktown, nor in walking distance of it.

Great Hotel, nothing shady about this place, loved staying there for concerts, they drive you door to door to Cox center... its not in bricktown proper, but if 2 min drive is too far than you definitely have to stay at Renaissance or Hilton. Great prices also....

I live in OK so I have no need to stay there but I think I would try a different hotel if you are looking to stay in Bricktown. There is a beautiful new Residence Inn and also a Hampton Inn is under construction depending on when you are staying.

    Erick, Sayre or Elk City?

Will be traveling from eastern Arizona to Hot Springs, AR for July 4th festivities and need a hotel along the way. Would like to make it to one of these cities the first day then spend the night at a clean, safe hotel and have a place for dinner Stayed in Elk City last year - the Ramada was in horrible condition. The Holiday Inn there is $110/night and we need two rooms, so thought Erick or Sayre might be a better choice.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions and help!

    Erick, Sayre or Elk City?

I would just push onto OKC, it isn%26#39;t that much farther.

    Mike in Tulsa

    Erick, Sayre or Elk City?

Thanks, Mike, for your reply. That would mean a 780 mile day and we%26#39;ll lose 2 hours going east (we don%26#39;t do daylight savings time in AZ). Not sure I can face 13 hours in a car that day. Sayre would be 650 which is still a long day. I have the feeling we%26#39;ll want to get off the road.

It has been 5 yrs since we were in Erick, but the motel was new and the Rafter T a good place to eat, but not fancy. Home of Monte Wooley %26amp; Roger Miller, not that it counts for anything.

Unfortunately, $100 a night is pretty standard these days for a decent property. Any less, and you%26#39;re getting the Ramada Inns of the world: nice hotels from the 1960s that need a lot of updating. That said, there%26#39;s a nearly new Hampton Inn in Clinton. Probably will cost as much as the HI in Elk City, but it%26#39;s an option.

One exception to the $100 rule, I%26#39;ve found, is Microtel. Very plain and very bare bones, Microtels are mostly newer and almost always well kept. There%26#39;s a Microtel in Hinton, OK, about 70 miles east of Elk City.

You might also look into Shamrock, TX, which has always been a stopping point on the Mother Road, though I don%26#39;t know what options you%26#39;ll find there.

Thanks, everyone! I checked into Clinton - all the hotels are booked for that night. Can%26#39;t imagine what%26#39;s going on in Clinton, Ok!!! Have booked two rooms at AmericInn in Sayre for $80/nt. It gets decent reviews and there seem to be a few restaurants that would suit us. Will post review upon our return.

AmericInn is a good place to stay. Built a couple of years ago and seems to stay pretty busy. A great place to eat is Simons Catch, which is west of Elk City located at the Merrit road exit. About a 15 minute drive from Sayre. All you can eat catfish and trimming%26#39;s, or excellent steaks.

Thanks for the tip about Simon%26#39;s Catch! I miss my fried catfish out here in AZ. Have made note of the exit and will look forward to it!

  • Broken Bow with 1 1/2 year old

My husband wants to go to Broken Bow for a weekend to do a little fishing. Where is the best place to stay with a baby? We need a place that has either a swimming pool or swimming beach area for her.

Broken Bow with 1 1/2 year old

We went to Broken Bow last 4th of July with a 6 year old. The lake was what I consider cold, but there were a few people swimming. Our son did have a good time playing in the sand. There was a pretty nice swimming hole inside Beavers Bend Park. We rented a cabin with a hot tub that was on a covered porch. It turned out that our son loved the hot tub when it was not turned on. He used it for a pool. Hope this helps.

Broken Bow with 1 1/2 year old

You could try the lodge at Beaver%26#39;s Bend State Park or even one of their cabins. Most of them are in close proximity to a swimming beach. The cabins are closer to the swimming beach on the Mountain Fork River, below the lake, (no current...the river is slightly dammed here) and the lodge is right on the lake. Like a previous poster said, prepare for some cold water.

Need a hotel and diner recommendation!

We will be travelling from Memphis to Wichita in September and will making an overnight stop around Tulsa area somehwere.

Can anyone recommend a hotel not far off the interstate that has places to eat/drink around it tat we can walk to. We%26#39;d also love to experience an american diner type place on our road trip. Any recommendations?

Need a hotel and diner recommendation!

Actually we are also considering going through to Stillwater instead for the night? Any opinions on this town and where to stay?

Need a hotel and diner recommendation!

This link will take you to a review (complete with pictures) of The Rock Cafe, located in Stroud, Oklahoma, which lies about halfway between Tulsa and Oklahoma City, just off Interstate 44. Stopping in Stroud will take you a few miles out of your way between Tulsa and Stillwater, but it could be worth it, if you want some real local diner food. You won%26#39;t find any luxury accomodations in Stroud, but there will be at least a few reasonably-priced motor lodges there.

    www.roadfood.com/Reviews/Writeup.aspx…

I went to college in Stillwater at Oklahoma State, and its a great town. The best local/well-known place to eat would be Eskimo Joe%26#39;s (http://www.eskimojoes.com/). Its not a diner, but is American food. This is the only location %26amp; its popular.

As for hotels, they are mostly chain and there is one on the campus that is supposed to be nice. There is a Hampton Inn, Fairfield Inn, Best Western, and the campus hotel is The Atherton which actually may be your best bet(http://www.athertonhotelatosu.com/).

    Hope this helps!

    Thanks for that info.

Can you tell me if the Cimarron Hotel is within walking distance to Eskimo Joe%26#39;s? It%26#39;s at 315 N. Husband Road. It looks like it only opened this year.

Or is the hotel on campus you mentioned walking distance?

    Thanks heaps.

Yes, the hotel on campus is within walking distance--Eskimo Joes is right across the street from campus. I checked the Cimarron that just opened %26amp; you could walk it, its about half a mile I%26#39;d say. It sounds nice, I haven%26#39;t seen it yet, they%26#39;ve built it since I%26#39;ve been there. Either place would be fine though, but Cimarron is a little further.

Here is the visitor%26#39;s website, this may have some additional info.

    http://www.visitstillwater.org/Home

Frankly, if you want a little taste of the Okie version of ';Americana';, you ought to stick to the smaller towns between Tulsa and Stillwater. Stillwater would be a good place to spend the night, but as for the trip between the two, I suggest following Highway 33 east from Tulsa (Stay off the Cimarron Turnpike - you won%26#39;t see anything from there, except a few trees, pavement and other cars) and drive through the small towns of Drumright, Cushing and Perkins, and stop for lunch at one of the little home-town cafes in one of those towns. Where Hwy 33 intersects with Hwy 177, you can drive straight north to Stillwater. Following that route will take you about 10 miles out of your way. Just watch your speed. Those small towns like to hand out speeding tickets. Not that there is really anything that unique, or even terribly intersting in any of those small towns, but if you have never been in Rural America before, and like to see how the small town folks live, you might see something memorable. If nothing else, it might demonstrate how similar (or different) small town life in Oklahoma is to small town life in Queensland. The locals will likely get more of a kick out of your accent than anyone in Stillwater will (that is, if you are a Queensland native, rather than a transplanted Texan or something). Stillwater being a college town, they are accustomed to having people from other countries around, but the little towns around there don%26#39;t get that many visitors. You might even hear someone say, ';You ain%26#39;t from around here ar ye boy?'; Be sure to stock up on Eskimo Joe%26#39;s T-shirts. At one time (at least, so I%26#39;ve heard) they were the second-largest selling T-shirt design from a restaurant, behind Hard Rock Cafe.

One of my favorite local-color restaurants is in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, about 45 miles north of Tulsa. Dink%26#39;s has been serving great barbecue for 25 years. It%26#39;s a very casual, homey place with excellent food at reasonable prices. I don%26#39;t know that it truly classifies as a ';diner,'; but it is definitely unique.

    http://www.dinksbbq.com/

Bartlesville has two interesting options for hotels. Neither is within walking distance of Dink%26#39;s but both are in the old downtown section, within easy walking distance of many other establishments. One is the Hotel Phillips, which was built in the 1940s as an apartment building for employees of the Phillips Petroleum Company. It%26#39;s a lovely old place on a tree-lined avenue, and the service is always excellent. Rooms at the Phillips are usually in the $100 range. http://www.hotel-phillips.com/

The other option, which is both more unique and more expensive, is the Inn at Price Tower. Price Tower is the only ';sky scraper'; Frank Lloyd Wright designed and built. Originally an office building, it has been converted to other uses. The lower floors house an art museum; the middle floors are hotel rooms; and the upper levels are a lounge and restaurant. If you go to Bartlesville, you must plan time to visit the Price Tower, whether you stay there or not. http://www.pricetower.org/

From Bartlesville, you could go north into Kansas and then head west to Wichita through some very picturesque parts of the American plains.

Agree with TwoProfs about Bartlesville. In fact, I was going to suggest it myself, but thought it might be too far off your planned route. Actually, though, if you just head north from Tulsa instead of west, you can go through Bartlesville, and it probably won%26#39;t take you out of your way at all, and frankly, I think it offers more to see and do than any of the other spots outside Tulsa, including Stillwater. Also, the drive between Bartlesville to Wichita will be prettier, if you go north from B%26#39;ville into Kansas, then take Hwy 166 west until you hit I-35. I%26#39;ve always liked that stretch of Hwy 166. To TwoProfs%26#39; list for Bartlesville, I would add that a lunch or dinner at Murphy%26#39;s Steakhouse, would be a touch of local flavor that you can%26#39;t get just anywhere. Have the hot hamburger with onions and ';gravy over all.'; It%26#39;s a heart-attack-on-a-plate meal that is legendary in that area. The other main attraction of interest near Bartlesville is Woolaroc (a combination of the words ';woods, lakes and rocks';), which was the country home of oilman Frank Phillips. Located about 15 miles from town, it has a very nice on-site western and Native American history and art museum, including one of the largest collections of Colt firearms in the world, and many paintings and sculptures from famous Western and cowboy artists, including Fredrick Remington.

Spyderwood - i liked your suggestion about seeing small town America as it would be great to see the differences between American country towns and home (especially because we are farmers from rural Queensland).

I was also considering Bartlesville because it sounds like a lovely town.

So i have some thinking to do!

    I appreciate your advice, thanks.

So, here%26#39;s another suggestion. From Tulsa, take Hwy 11 north through the small towns of Sperry and Skiatook. At Skiatook, take Hwy 20 west to Hominy. At Hominy, take Hwy 99 north to Hwy 11, then follow Hwy 11 east to Barnsdall. Just after passing through Barnsdall, take Hwy 123 toward Bartlesville (If you stay on Hwy 11, it will take you back to Skiatook, where you started). Woolaroc is located on Hwy 123, so you could stop in there, if you are inclined and if you arrive during operating hours. Then you can proceed on up to Bartlesville for the night.

This way, you don%26#39;t have to decide between small rural towns and a trip to Bartlesville. Although Bartlesville is hardly a teeming metropolis, it is the largest of the small towns north of Tulsa for quite some distance.

  • this works
  • Need help with driving route

I posed this at the end of another post i made and also in the Kansas forum. Thought i%26#39;d start a new thread and hopefully get a response.

We will be driving from Tulsa to Hutchinson Kansas and want advice on the best route to go.

We are going to leave in the morning from Tulsa and drive to Woolaroc and have a look there. Then drive to Bartlesville for lunch at Murphy%26#39;s Steakhouse.

The next part i am not sure on yet is which route to take to Hutchinson from there. It%26#39;s either head north into Kansas and then West to Wichita. I%26#39;m not sure what kind of country we will be driving through there... My husband would be happy to drive past grain farms.

Or the other option as someone mentioned could also be a nice drive is to head west from Bartlesville, through Ponca city and then up to Hutchinson.

So if you have any suggestions on which way to go and what we%26#39;ll see along the way, i%26#39;d love to hear about it!

Also on google maps, a part of oklahoma just west of Bartlesville is shaded, can i ask a silly questions and say why??

    Need help with driving route

I would suggest that you simply head west (left) from Murphy%26#39;s along Frank Phillips Blvd to Hwy 60, then continue west along Hwy 60 until you come to the intersection with Hwy 99, about 5 miles before you get to Pawhuska. Go north on Hwy 99 until you hit Hwy 54, just east of Eureka, KS. Take 54 west through the town of El Dorado and continue for a few miles until you pass the I-35 toll road, then after another mile or so, turn north on 196. Follow 196 to I-135 and take it north for a couple of miles to the Hwy 50/Hutchinson exit, and follow Hwy 50 west to Hutchinson. These roads will mostly be small two-lane roads, with no parking ';shoulders';, so if you like a wide comfy road, it may not be the route for you, but you will see more interesting countryside this way, than if you head west through Ponca City and take I-35 north. Following the Ponca City route, the terrain becomes pretty bleak once you leave Pawhuska, with the most interesting sight along the way being the oil refinery at Ponca City. My suggested route will also let you bypass Wichita, which is also not a pretty sight, at least not from the highway.

The shaded area on the map is Osage County, otherwise known as the Osage Indian Nation. Ownership on Native American lands is a very complicated mix of rights which I can%26#39;t explain, but suffice it to say that the map is shaded to denote the fact that it is a form of tribal land.

    tornado's

    Hi

We will be in broken arrow and probably other places around the area in may. We will only be there for about 4 days. My question is this, what chances are there of seeing a tornado. I%26#39;m not wishing for them, I know they can be of great concern to locals, but it would be interesting to see one.

    Hope someone can help.

    tornado's

The specific chance of seeing a tornado is weather dependent and the general chance is very low.

For the USA, the total number of tornadoes in May averages around 160. For the Tulsa area, the average number for the entire year is between 5 and 7.

I%26#39;ve been living in Oklahoma over 30 years and have never seen one. But then, I don%26#39;t go looking for them even when I know they are in the area. On the other hand, a close friend had his house destroyed on May 3, 1999.

Still, while the time of year is right, I wouldn%26#39;t count on seeing any while you are here.

    tornado's

    Hi Modcon

Thanks for that. It%26#39;s one of those funny topics, like I said in my post, I know what they are capable of and would not want to see one that did any damage or god forbid killed anyone.

We look forward to our visit and will enjoy our time there, tornado%26#39;s or not.

On a lighter note, my wife has just said thank goodness for that, she would not want to come anywhere near one!

Anyway, thanks again and see you in may.

I perfectly understand your wife%26#39;s feelings and agree 100%!

We had a small tornado (F1) touch down in Edmond (on the northern border of Oklahoma City) just a few nights ago. It kept skipping along like a stone on a lake across a small section and mostly tore up roofs and caused some tree damage. But at least one of the homes it hit lost almost the entire roof. As far as I%26#39;ve heard, no deaths and only some very minor injuries.

And yes, you are correct - it%26#39;s not something a sane persons wishes for, but they can be fascinating.

However, if there is a tornado anywhere in the area and it is still light enough, you can count on seeing live pictures on your TV.

    :)

    Modcon

Thanks for that, glad you understand where I%26#39;m coming from. We cannot wait to see what oklahoma has to offer, we have not been that far north, we arrive Atlanta,Ga and do the southern road trip taking in New Orleans, and heading up toward Texarkana and even into Texas. We will then head up your way before going back east toward Memphis %26amp; Nashville.

We suffered a hurricane in Orlando back in 1999 and that was scary.

We have done the southern road trip about 5 times now and sadly this could be our last trip stateside so we want to see as much as we can.

Anyway, thanks again for your help, we appreciate it.

Make sure you visit the Oklahoma Aquarium while in Tulsa! (It%26#39;s located in Jenks - a suburub.)

    http://www.okaquarium.org/

    :)

    Have fun!

    Will check it out, thanks

I guess there%26#39;s always a chance but I lived in the Tulsa area for 2 years and another 2 years in Lawton and I never saw one - except on those wonderful weather camera%26#39;s that are all over Oklahoma.

Having just spent an hour last night in my basement after the tornado sirens sounded, I%26#39;m glad I didn%26#39;t get to see one; saw a couple when I was a child but none as an adult. Last night just watched the non-stop local TV weather coverage.

The weather coverage here is excellent and if there are tornados while you%26#39;re in the state you might just get to see some ';live'; local TV video weather coverage.

For a good book on tornados, focused on a really big one that came through Oklahoma in 1999, you might read ';Storm Warning, The Story of a Killer Tornado.'; There were many tornados in Oklahoma that night, the biggest of which was ';on the ground'; from Moore, Oklahoma (South of Oklahoma City) until just outside of Tulsa (about 100 miles). Another night I was really glad I had a basement--and really glad the big tornado ';pulled up'; before coming into Tulsa.

Hope you enjoy your trip to Oklahoma!

Thanks for that, I will try and find something to read about them. It%26#39;s a pity my wife does not share my views on tornadoes. She will be very happy if she does not see any. They are showing a program over here called %26#39;stormchasers%26#39;, it%26#39;s a group of people doing research into what causes tornadoes and they are dashing about through Oklahoma, texas panhandle, south dakota,kansas..chasing the things.

They never seem to make it into one but you have to admire their spirit and bravery!

I was born in, and have spent a total of about 40 years living in Oklahoma, and except for the few years I%26#39;ve lived in Moscow, the others were spent in Colorado and Texas, all of which can have tornadoes. I%26#39;ve never seen a tornado. I think that%26#39;s probably true for most Okies. Of course, like someone said, the sane ones head for shelter when there%26#39;s a tornado in the area, but I once read a funny internet list to the effect that, ';You know you are an Okie if...'; One of the items on the list was, ';When you hear the tornado siren, instead of heading for cover, you go outside to get a good look.'; So, Moviemaker, maybe you%26#39;re just a misplaced Okie. You might also consider a visit to the National Severe Storms Laboratory in Norman, OK. Their tour info can be found at

    http://www.nssl.noaa.gov/aboutnssl/tours.php

    Hope you enjoy your trip!

    Will Rogers Airport

    Hello all,

Can anyone tell me if Will Rogers Airport is known as a smaller aiport or not? This is my first time to fly and I cant figure out if I should fiy Will Rogers or DFW or Love Filed. I am going to Vegas, I am the same distance from all of them.

    Anay information would be great!!

    Thanks

    Will Rogers Airport

We%26#39;re in the same position as you are, able to fly out of different airports easily, OKC or TUL or DFW. We much prefer Will Rogers over the Dallas airports. It%26#39;s MUCH smaller than DFW, much easier to negotiate, much easier to park, much less likely to have long lines, etc. The only time we fly out of DFW is when the price or the connections are significantly better; otherwise, we stick with OKC or TUL.

By the way, the Four Points Sheraton, right next to Will Rogers, lets you park for free while you%26#39;re gone if you spend the night with them. We drive up the evening before, stay at the Four Points, and use their free shuttle whenever we have an early flight. The Hyatt Place offers a similar service, but they%26#39;re farther from the airport and often much more expensive.

    Will Rogers Airport

Thanks for the great information. If I choose to stay and park at the hotel, is it in a safe area? Thanks again

Yes, we%26#39;ve always found the area very safe. The hotel is about a block from the terminal, located on the main road exiting the airport, so it%26#39;s in as safe a location as any of the airport parking. The area of the hotel lot where you%26#39;ll leave the car is well lit and in direct site of the front door of the hotel. We%26#39;ve stayed there at least a dozen times without a problem.

That sounds really good, I am going to call the hotel now. I think this is my best option. Tha;nks so much for the infomration.

    Have a good day!

  • Zios - is it still good under new management?

Hi I am booking a large group for dinner in Oklahoma City. Last year we were at Zios and it was great. I hear it is under new ownership. Has the food changed? Is it good? Thanks, Ginny

Zios - is it still good under new management?

Well, since nobody else will answer your question, I%26#39;ll give it a shot. This may not be helpful information, but the last time I ate at a Zio%26#39;s was in October last year, and it was in Tulsa. That was just about the time, or shortly thereafter, when Mazzio%26#39;s was selling it off, I think. At that time, it was as good as ever.

Zios - is it still good under new management?

I have been to the Zio%26#39;s in Bricktown as well as the location on Meridian and I still love both of them!

THe first few times we went to zios bricktown we loved it. Last few we did not. Food was oily and service was spotty. We have not been in about a 1 1/2 yrs now so dont know if this helps

What to do in Tulsa with kids?

My wife is going to a conference in AUG 2008 and we thought the kids and I might go with her and have a family vacation. What fun things is there to do in Tulsa with kids 9 and 7 yrs old. We are not into the museum scene. Where is a good place to stay with an indoor pool, where to eat somewhere besides fast food.

What to do in Tulsa with kids?

The Tulsa Zoo is a good one. Also, in August, the Big Splash water park might be a good idea. There is also a good (so I%26#39;ve heard) children%26#39;s museum, with lots of hands-on entertaining things for the kids to do, but I%26#39;m not sure about its appeal to 7 and 9 year olds. Someone else might have an opinion on that.

Best areas for good restaurants (chain or otherwise) are:

Brookside (Peoria Ave, roughly between 31st street and 41st St) http://www.brooksidetheplacetobe.com/

and Cherry Street (15th Street, between Utica Ave and Peoria Ave.

What to do in Tulsa with kids?

The Radisson has a fun kids pool called ';Leapin Louie%26#39;s Lagoon';. www.radisson.com/hotels/tulsadt/optional.page

The Jenks Aquarium is lots of fun. You can touch the sharks and rays, feed the rays and turtles.

    www.okaquarium.org

The Tulsa Zoo is fun. It has a great rainforest exhibit with lots of free roaming animals.

The Riverwalk Crossing is also a fun place to hang out. They have a great Mexican Restaurant - Los Cabos. They have outdoor bands, ice cream shops, dancing fountains, arcade, movie theater...even a trapeze school all in one location.

    www.riverwalkcrossing.com

    www.trapezeuniversity.com

Finally, Safari%26#39;s animal sanctuary is fun. They house lots of big cats. You can buy frozen chicken legs and feed them with long poles.

    www.safarissanctuary.org

Check out open play times at Pump It Up or SSB Kids...both fun for the kids.

I%26#39;m writing an article for The Boston Globe about summer travel deals and want to interview people who are going to vacation in Tulsa. You should like a good vacationer to interview. Please contact me at 617-929-3150 or nwong@globe.com because I would like to do a quick phone interview with you about why you decided to go to there.

    Thanks!

    Nicole Wong

(PS Other vacationers can contact me, too)

Actually, I did not pick Tulsa for a vacation spot, but since the wife has to speak at a conference we thought we would make a mini vacation out of it.

Even if you%26#39;re not big on museums, you should consider a visit to the Gilcrease. www.gilcrease.org/index.aspx Lots of western and Indian art that you and the children might enjoy. It%26#39;s not a huge place so you could wander through and see what you like, then move on.

Your kids are about the same age as mine. They will love the Aquarium--I know it seems weird in the middle of land-locked Oklahoma, but it is a really good one. The Riverwalk is one of our favorite places, too. Good Mexican food, running room, sometimes music, etc.

If you are there on a Thurs. evening, go to Utica Square for music in the square. It%26#39;s always good music, take a picnic, and dance. Utica Square offers great shopping for you and your wife too with the most popular stores like Pottery barn, etc.

We love Philbrook Art Museum (even though you said no museums) It has newly remodeled gardens that are gorgeous. Near there is the Woodward Park, with beautiful paths and photograph places. The azaelas may be in bloom.

    We love the zoo too!

Big Splash is a fun waterpark with wavepool, slides, etc. The Tulsa Driller is at the Expo Center right by Big Splash and you must get a picture if you are that close!

There are the Gold Prayer Hands at Oral Roberts if that interests you. They make a fun picture.

I%26#39;ll keep thinking! Have fun. Look for all the Penguin statues throughout Tulsa. They were fundraisers for the penguin exhibit at the museum and are fun to spot!

Don%26#39;t forget the Tulsa Air and Space Museum. It is right accoss the street from the zoo. Tulsa has a rich aviation history.

There are numberous lakes within 30 mins drive that have state parks with swimming areas as well.

It will be hot in August so the local water park Big Splash is a pretty good suggestion.

If you don%26#39;t mind driving to OKC 1.5 hrs to the SW, they have an amusement park called Frontier City http://www.frontiercity.com/ and a larger water park calle White Water Bay http://www.whitewaterbay.com/ . They are located on the same property. Neither are huge like the Six Flags parks, but there is pleanty to keep you busy. It would be a full day if you decided to do that.

If you need somewhere to hang out for an afternoon, you might try Incredible Pizza www.incrediblepizza.com). The pizza buffet isn%26#39;t all that wonderful - few are - but they have indoor mini-golf, indoor go-carts, bowling and arcade games.

Discoveryland USA has live outdoor productions of the musical ';Oklahoma'; with live horses and I understand the show is really good. Also Native American dancers before the show. http://discoverylandusa.com/contactus.shtml

The Bros. Houligan has great food and McGills is pricey but good.

    Tulsa to Guymon?

Does anyone know if there is a charter flight or some way to fly to Guymon OK from Tulsa OK? I have seen it recommended to go to Amarillo TX, how far is that from Guymon? I really just don%26#39;t want to drive 6 hours to get there and then stay the night for just one day...I%26#39;m travelling for business.

    Tulsa to Guymon?

The only flight you could get from Tulsa to Guymon would have to be a charter.

Flying to Amarillo and then driving to Guymon is an option, and the drive would be about 2 hours.

From Tulsa to Guymon is about a 5 hour drive. I%26#39;m not sure saving 6 hours is worth almost $300, but that%26#39;s up to you.

    Good luck!

    Tulsa to Guymon?

Do you know how I could find out some info on the charters? Who would I call or ask?

I was sort of joking about a charter - they are much, much more than $300. With a charter you are renting the plane and pilot by the hour for the trip there and back. And the hourly rates are not inexpensive. If you still wish to pursue a charter option, check with the local Tulsa airports for any air charter services at their locations.

    Here are links:

    http://www.roadhouseaviation.com/charter.html

My only realistic suggestions are to either drive there from Tulsa or fly to Amarillo and drive from there.

    Good luck.

Thank you very much. I am actually researching for my Mother who hates driving and was just sort of hoping for a miracle. I will check out those links and let her know. I appreciate all your help very very much!

  • Car Hire from Tulsa airport

I am coming to Tulsa from the UK in October, and was wondering about car hire. Is it cheaper to book a car in advance or can I just turn up at the airport and get the same price for car hire.

    Thanks

    Car Hire from Tulsa airport

I would book in advance; otherwise, you run the risk that cars will not be available. Use a booking engine like Expedia.com or Orbitz.com to compare the different vendors; but if you book at the company%26#39;s own web page, you won%26#39;t need a credit card in advance. That way, you can keep shopping for a better deal, right up until your departure.

    Car Hire from Tulsa airport

The %26#39;walk-up%26#39; rates for most car rental companies are often a lot higher than the %26#39;advanced reservation%26#39; rates. Like airlines, a lot of car companies offer their best rates if you book at least 3 weeks in advance - and unlike the airlines you can always cancel a car rental reservation with no penalty.

So, book ahead and monitor the rate and cancel the old reservation and rebook if you can get it for less.

    Two important points:

    1. When comparing rates, make sure the quoted rate includes ALL fees. Car rental companies, like airlines, have ';additional fees'; that can drive the rate up significantly.

    2. Make sure you understand when the car must be returned. Returning the car after the designated time can result in additional hours/days being charged, which also drives up the final rate. And there will be one, though how it%26#39;s calculated will vary from company to company.

    Enjoy your trip!

I should have said that three weeks in advance usually gets the better rate, but check right up until the last minute. Sometimes late deals are posted that can save you significant money.

The Winstar, which is the first exit north of Texas on I-35, has a Microtel just down the street. Otherwise, you%26#39;ll probably want to stay in Gainesville or in Ardmore.

  • Hotels near Mercy Hospital

Looking for some hotel suggestions that are very close within a mile or so of Mercy Hospital-with pool. We are not familar withthe OKC area at all-we have a family member coming into town for surgery ande need to be close

    TIA for any replies

    Hotels near Mercy Hospital

The closest hotels are on, or just off Memorial Road and are:

Springhill Suites 3201 W Memorial Rd

La Quinta Inn and Suites Quail Springs 3003 W. Memorial Road

Courtyard by Marriott 13511 Highland Park Drive,

    Hampton Inn 13500 Plaza Ter

Comfort Inn and Suites 13501 N Highland Park Blvd

The closest to Mercy would be the Springhill Suites (they used to be an Amerisuites) and the La Quita Inn and Suites. But all of the above hotels will be 1.5-2.5 miles from Mercy and they all have pools.

I hope everything goes well with the surgery.

    Thanks for your reply-

My mother-in-law has stayed at the Springhill Suites while in town and we went by to pick her up one day. The room was nice and had a sitting area with TV and coffee table. I remember that it also had a little ';coffee bar'; area with sink and tiny refrigerator in the room. It was clean, which is always important to me when staying in a hotel :)

I just thought I would share what I saw there. I have not been to the other hotels that modcon mentioned, but I always have good luck with Courtyard hotels and the one on Memorial is brand new. Hope you have a good stay!

The Springhill Suites hotels are Marriott properties and all of them are rooms with a sitting area and a small %26#39;kitchenette%26#39; with a sink, fridge and cabinets. I%26#39;ve stayed at several around the country and they are nice.

We decided on SpringHill Suites by Marriot for several reasons, the rooms are large enough for our family of 5 and they were willing to give the 2 other families traveling in to town the medical rate as well...the continental breakfast they offer was a nice added bonus

Thanks for letting me know that they were clean when you picked up your MIL, Adraitic21-one less thing to worry about during this trying time

I called the Courtyard by Marriot and they said they are unsure if they will be open by next Tuesday

Thanks again everyone-Our families appreciate your responses
